Thanks, Tom.

It always seems that one can go-to-the-bank (or the Apple Store    ) on what Charles Moore writes.

Kelly – look at his last paragraph.  thumbup.gif

Thanks Tom. A fine chronicle of Apple's inexorable march towards greatness!

And that is a great last paragraph for Kelly, RHP!

Good article. I think the G4 was probably the best all around chip in many a year.

QUOTE
By far the biggest boost to performance that the PowerPC G3 offers can be credited to its incorporation of an approach to level 2 cache memory known as backside cache.

The interim between the earlier PPCs and the G3 was the 604e which had 'inline' cache that was the precursor to the backside. My trusty 9600 did very well in tests vs the early G3s, holding its own and even besting them on some parameters. Then I had to upgrade with a G4 when X came along.

My Wallstreet is running a 466 G3 and performs with 10.3.9 pretty well considering its age. smile.gif

The G3 had a relatively long run, thanks to a series of revisions, ...

However, the sun will set on the G3 as a contemporary processor chip when OS X 10.5 Leopard is released, almost 10 years after the G3 first made its debut. If the scuttlebutt is correct, ... 10 years of OS support for the G3 is more than respectable...

I would add "has" to the first line quoted. :enegizer bunny:

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.
