Viewing pics in order in Preview
« on: November 29, 2007, 01:32:36 PM »
It's the strangest thing ... I have a folder of images with really interesting names like:

IMG_001.jpg
IMG_002.jpg
IMG_003.jpg

on up to IMG_117.jpg

So I select all, double-click so they'll open in Preview (which they do), and the pics are catty-whompus order wise.

They start with 001, 002, then 043 on up to 117, then back to 003 to 042.

But that's today's order.

Yesterday it was 001, 002, 020 up to 067, to 101, etc.

Every time I launch the set of pics, the order is different -- with the exception of the first 2 pics.

This isn't the only folder of pics that this happens with either -- it's every set of pictures I have.

It's annoying to not see the pics in order, and I don't know why they aren't in order --- they were on my G4.

If there's a simple solution to fix this, I'd sure love to know about it.

I don't know why they are changing. You are obviously doing something and not telling us! tongue.gif

I think X still uses the ASCII order of characters in sorting file names, I would assume that Apple's apps would do the same. dntknw.gif That means that "000" comes before "100". Which is fine, but it also means that "1" comes before "002"! That's because 'nothing' after the "1", in this case, sorts before even the "00" in the second case. While "0" has a smaller ASCII code number than "1", 'nothing has even a lower 'value' than anything else.

So, with numberings that include three digits (the stuff in front doesn't count, since it's exactly the same in all the files) they should look like they are sorted by the 'numbers' in spite of the fact that they really aren't.

Frankly, all bets are off when discussing what iPhoto does. It may be sorting by the value of the third pixel from the left in the fourth row for all I know! And why it changes is beyond me. I still say you are the cause of this whole problem! smile.gif laugh.gif

If I were paranoid, I'd think Scott Adams was watching/listening to me. See today's (11/30) <Dilbert>!
