Back in my OS9 days (uh, two months ago...) Command+Y was a useful and thus often used keyboard shortcut for "Put Away". Get those synapses working, you can remember...

Its use was to, well, put things away; such as a removable disc. These days, one does not "put" discs "away" but instead "Ejects" them, one method being Command+E.

Another use for "Put Away" was to return an item to its original location, such as a file that had been dropped into the Trash that the user wanted to rescue, or to spite the Evil Empire, to Recycle. Well, obviously, this is not an "Eject" operation, so Command+E is not the answer.

I've checked my reference book. It's not covered. That's dumb.

I checked Spotlight. It's not found. Nor does an inspection of the menus uncover a substitute or replacement for it.

Now, Command+Y still has a use in Leopard. It's the shortcut for Quick Look. It's my understanding that Quick Look is new in Leopard. It is pretty nifty, conceptually. But I'm not sure why it's much better than a Long Look.

Put Away is no more, I think. It seems that this reliable old function has been, well, put away.

Yeah, it isn't really available like in the format of OS 9. The closest thing is being able to take back the last action you performed in the Finder by Command+z  or using the Edit in the main menubar.

Well, once again, Gregg has taught me another tidbit I didn't know. Command-y activates "Quick Look." I've been doing the silly "select an item and press the space bar" method! doh.gif Do that space bar thing again and the "Quick Look" goes away, sorta like what he wants command-y to really do...

I think I can remember hearing the wails and screams when OS X came out and people discovered that every single keyboard shortcut/method/proceedure from OS 9 wasn't duplicated. Seems tha 'mother ship' knows what we need/want better than we do. dntknw.gif But that was the past and I can't think of anything now available that I would want to lose for something that's no longer available in past OSs. Thinking.gif I'll have to agree that command-z is better because you don't have to actually select anything before using the command, thus saving another trip from keyboard to mouse to keyboard. smile.gif

Another great feature of Leopard is the selecting of a file/folder name for editing without selecting its suffix! Been using my wife's iBook this last few days and realized how I missed that! smile.gif

And there's the Quick Look button at the top of the Finder window also. You can even use all three methods in almost any order. (You can't click the Quick Look button to hide the file image since the image covers the button.)

First of all, if you hide the suffixes (file extension codes) you don't even need to worry about it. But I find it useful to keep them visible. So...

It means that when you have of a file, say "P10002012.jpeg" or "Great Game.app" and you want to change the name to something slightly more descriptive.
1. Double-click the name or press Return when the file is selected.
2. Edit the name.
[Note: these are exactly the same steps with extensions hidden.]
No deselecting the ".jpeg" or ".app" required because that part of the name is not selected.
That is not the way X has operated before Leopard. Thus, when you wanted to change the name of anything, you would always get a warning and have to click a button acknowledging that you really did not intend to change the file type. wallbash.gif

As I said, however, this is not a problem if you just keep the suffixes hidden. Doing that, you might never even know this change is in Leopard! smile.gif

Gotcha. I have the extensions hidden, because I use Icon View the most, and that tells me what kind of file it is. I only work with a handful of file types. One strange thing though, my Word and Excel file icons will flash blue and green for a second, then they go gray. It seems like they retained their colors in Jaguar/Panther? (on my son's iBook).

When I double-click the name, the file opens. Hitting return with the icon selected highlights the name for editing, as you mentioned.

You are correct, of course. blush-anim-cl.gif That was changed some where along the line, I think. It used to bug me when a PC user would double-click the name and the app would start up, now it works that way in X. To edit the name you only have to highlight it and then press Return...wallbash.gif

Or click to select the icon and then click the text after a short wait. Too fast and it opens the app/file as you state.

Can't you click once and do a "mouse over" move to get it to highlight? (I'm not at my Mac.)
