You're so cutting edge, Mayo. hehehe

Let me know how our machine handles Leopard. I have it, but I'm still holding back.

I'm thinking that I will update a cloned volume Just In Case... I assume that the installer will let me do that. If everything runs well off the cloned volume then I will upgrade my iMac.

I'm looking forward to being able to see folks' desktops via iChat. That may help with remote trouble-shooting...

UPDATE:  Welll, I can't install Leopard on one of my external drives because I need to reformat them in GUID... I guess that the GUID formatted drive in my iMac can play nice with the external Apple Partition Map-formatted drives. I will have to Re-Think this!

My upgrade to Leopard was a disaster with lots of finder crashes. I finally did an erase and install, and used Migration Assistant on my 10.4.11 backup successfully. After installing the 10.5 compatible FruitMenu (on 10.5.2) I got more finder crashes. I have a Rev.1 G5 iMac. In my experience Leopard has a tough time with some pref panes. As much as I liked FruitMenu and Windowshade, I'll take Leopard for now. I hope you have more success with the haxies than I did.

Hmmm... Me thinks I will hold off for now. Me has better things to do than fool around with a major OS upgrade...

Was your first attempt a basic upgrade or did you do an Archive and Install?

I'm guessing that Application Enhancer is not compatible with Husband 1.0 wink.gif

I did do an archive and install, and performance was flaky in 10.5 and 10.5.1, and totally useless in 10.5.2. I still had Applecare and they suggested I stay at 10.5.1, which I thought was ridiculous. I Googled "leopard upgrade finder crash iMac G5" and found a post where the user did a clean install and migration from a backup disc. I had a solid 10.4.11 backup and this worked. I do have the APE pref pane disabled as the Leopard Insanity haxies brought back the finder crash. When the finder loads, no apps or discs appear on the desktop- although you can launch apps from the dock. My daughter had no issues at all upgrading on her MacBook that had shipped with Tiger, but that's an Intel processor.

Well, I finally found the time to upgrade - but I did it on a brand new 500 GB drive and then used Migration Assistant. The only glitch was iTunes and that isn't related to the Leopard upgrade per se, but the iTunes 7.6.1 upgrade that so many have had problems with. It wouldn't see my iTunes Library for love nor money (same issue others report) and so I simply replaced it with 7.5 by dragging and dropping from my old HD and voila! Problem gone. smile.gif

Otherwise, smooth as silk. No issues whatsoever with any applications so far - MS Office X (still have to update that - 2008 is sitting here awaiting install), Adobe Creative Suite CS3, GoLive CS, iPhoto 6 (iLife 8 also sitting on my desk) etc.  I'm using a G5, so the formatting is still MacOS Extended. My MacBook Pro, which I updated several months ago, is GUID - but I don't back it up to any external drives used with the G5 - it has it's own little backup drive, though I don't generally use it for generating new files and if I do, I copy those to the G5, which gets backed up daily and weekly.

So...Mayo, I'd simply reformat one of those external drives and start nice and clean, and use Migration Assistant to bring your files over. Don't forget to repair permissions after installing - there seemed to be things that needed "fixing" even on a brand new install. Do check iTunes to make sure your Library is seen - if not, downgrade to 7.5 by dragging over the application and the iTunes Library data file which will take care of that. It took a little over 3 hours all told, but over 2 of them were just copying all the files with Migration Assistant. With 210GB of files to copy, it took a while, even with fast internal SATA drives.

Chuckwagon, did you install the FruitMenu beta 3.7b1? It only came out on Saturday, which is why I ask. It seems rather variable judging by the comments at VersionTracker - rock solid for some, crashing all over the place for others. It IS a beta.

Thanks for the advice Paddy. I'm still going to wait a bit until I have the time and inclination to do the upgrade.  It will also give me the opportunity to see how others are doing with FruitMenu and APE.

Today I am setting up a friend's eSATA dual-drive external enclosure. The enclosure arrived from OWC with a DOA power supply, so after sending it back and all the poor girl has been dealing with this for over a month.  She has two 1 Terabyte drives installed and after some research I decided to not create a RAID 1... Even with the eSATA connection via an Express card in her MBP data transfer takes a while. It should be Pretty Trick once I have it set up.

<MaxMenus> worked out of the 'box' for me. Of course, my Leopard was already in its cage when I bought my iMac...but by then almost everything I used was Leopard/Intel compatible. clap.gif Anxciously awaiting Elements 6 which will be out next week. smile.gif

I prefer FruitMenu over MaxMenus because FruitMenu-customized contextual menus can be accessed anywhere on the desktop via Control-Click. I have right button of my Kensington Orbit programmed for Control-Click.

On a 24" monitor I don't want to have to mouse to a corner/border in order to access a menu...

Paddy, it wasn't the latest beta- but now things are so smooth I'm not to keen to upgrade. Maybe I'll look at MaxMenu. By the way, Chuckwagon was already taken by my ISP (4 ISPs ago) so I've stuck with Chuckwagen!
