External firewire boot
« on: May 16, 2008, 10:13:39 AM »
After cloning to an external firewire 250 gb (5 partitions)....could choose it in start up window  but impossible to boot from it
(it's DW ok...)

Is the 120 gb limit also on external drives  or what could it be ...??? Thinking.gif

Thanks

Which machine and what OS are you doing this on?  I can recall having problems with my AGP-G4 that might have had to do with the size and location of the boot partition on the drive.  Could it work with a "small" partition at the beginning of the drive that had a OS 9.2 system on it as well?  I've also had external firewire boxes that didn't work with a given machine.  I'm sure the devil's in the details! wink.gif

I also think I can recall something not working in a similar situation when an subversion upgrade took place 10.4.5 or so to 10.4.10?

Using  a DA whith  TIGER  10.4.11....

The partition i 'm trying to boot is the first in the external drive and it's about 45 GB...

I 'm quite sure the boot was possible before

Have you tried changing the FW cables and noting which port you are using when you have trouble with this and the DW reports?

Could be one of the ports or cables is flakey and giving you these problems.

I just fired up TTP to see if I could find out why you are having trouble and all I get is the beach ball when I ask it to do something.

This is the first time I've tried it with Tiger yet it is an OK version 4.1.2.  Thinking.gif

Oh well, don't have time to play tonight.

Try running the tests on what it can see and maybe it will 'shock' it into seeing the drive itself.

What software did you use to clone volumes to the external drive? The only one I trust to result  in a bootable volume is Superduper! Other kinds of software may not work as well.

TTP is 4.1.2...and i bought and use  Superduper 2.5

Wondering if the fact that TT can't see the drive has something to do whith the booting of that drive ...

As i got a lot of things on it  i wait for reformating ...would it be a good thing?

Thanks

Do you have DiskWarrior. If you do, check to see if DW "sees" the drive.

Yes  DW can see the drive...

Relaunch TT and  found it but "not compatible to test

The drive is OK  but can't boot on it even on the OS9 partition.

Maybe it's the enclosure "Silver Touch"...i'm quite sure i was able to boot on it before,

I bought it on ebay but Macway  sells them so they should be compatible...Thinking.gif

What can i do else..?

Thanks

Lot of work but you could try swapping the external drive with an internal and see if the same problem exists. If so, the enclosure is your problem.
