What are you listening to?
« on: June 12, 2008, 09:19:06 AM »
I'm listening to Kelley Hunt right now (her self-named CD)!  She's a Lawrence resident and she has sung at family weddings so I'm kind of fond of her warm blues!  I also just heard about Roger McGuinn's website with his versions of old folk music available (one posted each month):

http://www.ibiblio.org/jimmy/folkden-wp/

I guess he's been doing this every month since 1995 and compiled 100 of the songs onto a 4 CD set called the Folk Den Project:

I am totally addicted to the soundtrack from the film "Grizzly Man" by Richard Thompson.(Soundtrack Review)  Gosh it is good and so easy to have on in the background while I work.

Also, the radio version of BBC's Dad's Army which is brilliantly funny and lovely.Webpage Info

Anything by Richard Thompson is a work of genius, but that was a very good soundtrack. If you can get your hands on the DVD of the movie, there's a bonus feature on the disk about the making of the soundtrack.

Frances, dBoh - Thanks for bringing up Richard Thompson; I leaned over and put his Action Packed compilation on my iTunes!  I've appreciated his guitar-work ever since Fairport Convention days!

His son, Teddy, came up to Shetland last month and was very good.  I really enjoyed his concert.  Obviously, had he brought his dear old dad, I would have enjoyed it alot more!!!!  But I can recommend Teddy.

Also, the song "Persuasion" has to be my all time most favouritest song in the whole world!

Up late (early) and I put on a Townes Van Zandt Live Set from a dinky Houston club called the "Old Quarter" in the year I graduated from high school (1973).  Bad acoustics but a great live set!  TVZ never got the props he deserved as a singer or a songwriter but he sure turned out some great and avocative stuff!

If you remember The Stranglers (Golden Brown, No More Heroes, Peaches), former lead singer Hugh Cornwell has a new album out called Hooverdam which you can download free from http://www.hooverdamdownload.com/

I've just listened to a couple of tracks, but liked what I've heard so far.

Thanks Highmac, as the price is right I'll download and have a listen!  I forgot to mention a neat story about "Sneaky Pete" Kleinow, the great pedal steel guitar player and animator:

Some people are born with great talents!  I ought to name my mid-range hearing loss in my right ear after him!

As you know, I love the soundtrack from Grizzly Man.  Does anyone know of similar stuff - not the weird bits - the tuneful guitar pickings type?

I find it easy to listen to and would like to broaden my horizons.

Cheers

Not exactly the same but the following spring to mind

1) Bert Jansch (with and without John Renbourn)
2) Ry Cooder
3) Nick Drake
4) Early John Martyn

I've always (since my 20's) enjoyed Ry Cooder and Leo Kottke.  I've got to remember to seek out more of their stuff!

I think I am looking for tuneful guitar bimblings really.  No singing, if possible or at least keep it to the bare minimum!

Heaven Knows I'm NOT Miserable Now wink.gif but I'm listening to The Smiths

I've also been listening a lot to my favourite album of the year so far The Last Shadow Puppets.  Lots of nice stuff on the website for their album The Age of the Understatement.
