flip video for macintosh
« on: June 18, 2008, 07:18:22 PM »
With a young grandchild, I was considering buying a flip video.  There seems to be some problems with the Mac rather than pc. Are there easily overcome?  Do people like the newer version with the rechargeable batteries better than the old version?  Thank you.

Having now read at least some of the 34 one-star reviews at Amazon, I'd be less than enthusiastic about buying one of these. Cheap yes, but the Mac users aren't a happy lot. Plus someone mentioned difficulties getting the video into other (standard) formats. My son was interested in getting one a while ago and I investigated then, but came to the conclusion that they were basically toys - YouTube video quality was about all you'd ever get from them.

Have a look at the Aiptek camera:

Also consider when and where you will be using the camera. If it's NOT outside in bright light 95% of the time, I'd suggest either getting a better quality camera or not getting one at all and sticking with stills - or getting one of the Canon point and shoot digital cameras that also does short video clips.

ilw-00:

My wife has a Canon PowerShot A430 that has 4X optical zoom.
It takes excellent 4Megapixel stills and excellent 640x480 videos.
It cost around $200.

Amazon has the Canon PowerShot A460 listed for $100. It also 4X optical zoom.
(This is sold thru Adorama Camera, a very reputable firm.
It is a 5MP camera and is a step up from the A430.
This is a REAL BARGAIN at $100! It lists for $230.
It has a USB port for uploading pictures and video to your Mac.
It uses SD cards. You can buy 2GB SD cards for $20.
That's lots of capacity for many photos and a lot longer video than the Flip video.

You would be a lot happier with it.

Canon has excellent optics, among the best in the industry.
I have a Canon PowerShot S2 IS camera that I love. It takes video with excellent stereo sound.
But it's a lot larger than the Axxx series.
