OSX 10.5 Family Pack won’t mount!

Need help installing OSX 10.5 Family Pack in iMac (iGloo)
G4 700 MHz with 640 SDRAM  with OSX 10.3.9

I installed OSX 10.5 Family Pack in iMac (iGloo)
G4 1GHz with 1.25 GB SDRAM
Which already had OSX 10.4x installed.
No problems installing.

When trying to install OSX 10.5, the 700 MHz G4 will not read the disk;
Nor will it read a 10.4 install disk
Nor will it read an iLife ’08 Family Pack disk
However it will read an iWork ’08 Family Pack disk.
When reading iWork, it says that it requires OSX 10.4.1 to install.

Any ideas, solutions, suggestions, or even sympathy will be appreciated.

Shalom

Weldiger, sorry to tell you, but the G4 iMac doesn't quite make it in the system requirements dept. for Leopard. sad.gif

(There is a work around - see: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?sto...071026083746346 if you really want to try it - but you'll need to get the beast to read the DVD first!!)

The 700MHz G4 iMac shipped with a CD/RW combo drive - it should be able to read the install DVDs for 10.4 and 10.5. Not sure what is going on there. Do you have a backup of 10.4 anywhere that you could use to clone to the 700 GHz iMac if all else fails?

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Weldiger, if you've got an external Firewire or USB drive, you should be able to use the workaround Paddy posted by getting the Igloo iMac to read the DVD and then use the instructions from the link in her post to make the DVD restore on the external drive. And if you don't have or can't find a Tiger disk, PM me.

But if you do have your Tiger disk, you should be able to do an install on the 700 G4 iMac pretty much the same way by restoring the install disk on the external drive, since Tiger needs to be on there before you install Leopard. Not sure if you have to run all the updates then, however.

And there's more here: http://liveslick.com/2007/12/28/install-le...nal-hard-drive/

But IAW Paddy about the drive on the 700 iMac, don't really know what's going on with that combo drive. Might need cleaning, might be toast, unfortunately. Thinking.gif

Chris, I don't think there is any requirement to have Tiger before installing Leopard. It's a full install, not an update. smile.gif

Weldiger, I'm not sure which applications are on DVDs and which on CDs these days - but I think that iLife is a DVD and iWork is on a CD. OS X has been on DVD for the last couple of releases. It would seem that your iMac is refusing to read DVDs. Are you sure it has a combo drive? There WAS a configuration that was $1299 that shipped with a CD-RW. Methinks this might be the issue!!!

*US$1299 for the configuration that shipped standard with a CD-RW drive and 128 MB of memory (M8672LL/A). US$1499 for the configuration that shipped with a "Combo" drive, 256 MB of memory, and a set of Apple Pro speakers (M7677LL/A). On March 21, 2002, citing higher memory and LCD costs, Apple raised prices by US$100 -- to US$1399 and US$1599 -- respectively. On August 31, 2002, Apple lowered the prices by US$100, back to those originally offered.
Check your model number - or have a look in your system profiler to see what it says about the optical drive. smile.gif

The 10.5 disc is a DVD. So is the iLife '08 disc, if I recall correctly, and the iWork is a CD.

It sounds to me like your 700 MHz G4 does not have a DVD drive; it only has a CD drive. That's why the DVDs won't mount.

New Slogan for TS!
“When in Doubt - Check Us Out!”

Paddy, thanks for being the first to respond, and for the links to work arounds.

Gregg, thanks for the sympathy!

Chriskleeman, thanks for the additional information, and the offer on Tiger Disk.  I do have the Tiger disk which is a DVD.

Paddy, thanks for follow up, I checked the 700 MHz - it did come with only a Sony CD RW, and the 1GHz iGloo, came with a Hitachi DVD RW.

Tacit, thanks for your additional info on which Disks and CPUs were which.

Thanks to all for your input and help.
Looking at the 10.5 install DVD it appears that it contains less than 4 GB of info.
Before getting another back up drive, I might try using a 4 GB USB drive to copy the 10.5 install.

Thanks again.

I will post results when I get time to try all this.
Shalom
