Reinstalling iTunes
« on: February 16, 2003, 12:23:00 AM »
Ever since the upgrade to iTunes 3.x, I'm experiencing troubles that I can't seem to solve. I'm running 10.2.4, but if I have iTunes playing, every single application or browser slows down beyond belief .... to the point where I'm not using iTunes at all because of the frustration of trying to slog uphill through molasses!

I want to reinstall iTunes, and know that I have to trash the existing application first ... but does that mean  all  parts of it, or just some?  And how do I insure that I don't lose my music?

I'll wait for advice before I mess this up, big time!

Hi,

I'm not sure about reinstalling iTunes, but before you start, have you done the basic OSX maintenance stuff?  (Repairing permissions (from your hard drive disk utility application, not from the CD), running fsck -y, and running disk repair from the CD.)

I have, Rob.  I thought initially that there was something wrong with either Chimera(Navigator) or Safari.  Then I went back to IE and same issues.  Shortly after that, I think, is when I noticed it when using Appleworks.

If you did a standard installation of iTunes and do not want to lose the music do not trash or move the iTunes folder which should be in /Users/username/Music.

Also, before you trash and reinstall the application, try trashing the preferences:

com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist
com.apple.iTunes.helper.plist
com.apple.iTunes.plist

They are located in /Users/username/Library/Preferences.

So far, so good with just trashing those prefs., kps. I'll see how it goes for awhile here, but if it was that simple, I'll be one happy camper!

There's a good chance it was precisely "that simple"...

If the corruption re-occurs, you'll have to try and find out what causes it. That is not so easy.

Everything is still running perfectly, so that must have been the trouble! I have to learn what I can toss in X .... I had it down to a science in 9!
