Anyone running 10.5 on slower computers?
« on: August 01, 2008, 12:55:15 PM »
I've got a friend who wants to program Widgets for iPhones and he says he needs to run OS 10.5.  He has a 800MHz G4 and it was a model that was made for OS X and I was wondering if anyone was running 10.5 on similar hardware and did it work?

I haven't run Leopard on a Mac that old but I will offer a little advice: have your friend make sure that he has sufficient RAM installed for Leopard.  I think that the minimum is 512MB... If you run the installer with insufficient RAM the Mac will lock-up when restarted and the DVD must be ejected using the following procedure:

1) Hold Control-Command-Option-Eject Button; this will shut down your computer.
2) Turn the power on with the power button and hold Command-Option-O-F -- this will boot you into open firmware.
3) Now type eject cd all Macs and wait until the CD pops out.

I know this only because a client tried to install Leopard on a G5 iMac with its stock allotment of 256MB RAM...

Your friend will have to do some tweaking to get it to install.

Have him read these links:

I'm researching about whether 10.5 is "actually" needed for this process.  The original iPhones came before 10.5 so if there were tools around then they should run under 10.4!
