Removing typos from the 'Auto-fill' list in Firefox
« on: August 20, 2008, 09:08:07 PM »
Firefox has been my 'firstline' browser for a while now, and over time I have accidentally introduced several erroneous entries into the Autofill 'database', so that a number of sites I frequent regularly [or regularly frequent, if you prefer toothgrin.gif ] now present me with two or three inappropriate choices in addition to the one correct option [I know, it's just one extra click, but one extra click several times every day gets really annoying really quickly].

So I would like to get into this database, file, or whatever depository of data it is, and edit out the typos.

Any love for the big, tall, old dude from da Texas?

TIA, KB coolio.gif

The autofill in Firefox is actually the Google toolbar. Click on the little round grey icon on the far right on the toolbar and go down to Options. In the large drop down window you will see the checkmark by Autofill and under it Autofill Settings. Click on that and you will get the main form with most of the information to edit.

If you don't have the Google toolbar on a separate line, click on the arrow to the right of the Google search box, then click Manage, then Features on the drop down window.

Also in Windows if the wrong info shows up in a form online they can highlight the info and hit Shift+Delete to remove it from the database. Then you put the correct info into the form and it will be kept.. I'll bet something similar could be done with the Mac. Maybe Option or Command + Delete.

Thnask for the reply, Kris, but I don' see any vaguely resembling a little round grey icon to the right of the Google search field... Maybe this is another Tiger/Leopard difference?

In the top bar of the pic you posted you will see the Google search field. Click on the arrow by the G and a drop down should appear with "Manage" at the very bottom. My bar looks a bit different with the G and arrow outside of the search area.

If you don't get the Manage option the rest of my instructions are irrelevant.

If so, click on Manage and you should see a drop down window, then click on the Features in the upper left corner and this should appear:

Be sure the AutoFill is checked then click on AutoFill Settings and you should get this:

Change whatever you need to on that form.

If none of this helps then try the idea of highlighting the wrong info when you get it in a form online and try using the Command+Delete or Option+Delete or any other key combo you can think of.  smile.gif

Yeah, well.  The option at the bottom of that drop-down reads, "Manage Search Engines", and I tried your other suggestion already; no joy. Thinking.gif

******************************Problem Solved!!!!!!!*****************************

I broke down and Googled, "edit Firefox autofill" [DUH!] and there were quite a few hits.  The answer was in the 2nd link on the list: highlight the unwanted list item and press Shift-Delete [dunno why I dint try that key combo; I tried Cmd-Delete, Option-Delete, Ctl-Delete, and others] but Shift-Delete did the trick!!!

Kris, thansk for all your help!

Yup.  Odd that it is the same key command that Windows uses.
I imagined that it would have been different with Macs.
Go figure.

Now I really AM going to bed....

Would you please post the actual link that you followed. When I use google to find this, the '2nd link on the list' takes me here and I'm not finding the answer.

Also, where in tarnation do you even find the info to delete it? I keep reading this:

QUOTE
AutoFill: Basics

To edit and use AutoFill, follow the steps below:

   1. Click the Settings > Options on your Toolbar.
   2. Select the checkbox next to AutoFill if it isn't checked already.
   3. Click the AutoFill Settings... button.
   4. Edit your information as necessary.
   5. Click OK.

But nowhere do I find Settings > Options on MY Toolbar. I can't find anything about Autofill either. Yet I know FF has stuff stored and I'd love to remove it.

Thanks!

PS: Having looked at the pretty pics of your FF browsers, I had to go download FF 3. Shiny!

So my system is: Mac OS 10.4.11 and FF 3.0.1

Kimmer, I found the original info on how to remove the data one piece at a time from this link:

http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/560996...s-autofill.html

They are Windows users so I assumed that Macs might have a different key sequence but apparently it is the same.

As to FF itself, you can clear private data by going to Tools/Clear Private data and you can check what you want to clear en masse.
[attachment=1036:FF_private_data.jpg]

If you have the Google Toolbar installed then follow the instructions I gave with the pics above.

The Shift+Delete method will remove individual data as it appears in online forms when you use AutoFill.  I don't use it so I can't speak to the efficacy of these methods.

I'm also using 10.4.11 and FF 3.0.1

In FF 3.0.1, I found on the Google Toolbar, an item right next to a small green circle called Settings. When I clicked on it, I got a drop down  menu that had the word Options .....  on it. Choosing Options, I  got the window that everyone has been looking for and was able to modify my credit card info.

Thanks, Kris. I had read that page, but I'm not really interested in clearing everything - just a few things. I'm thinking it can't be done and I'm stuck.

MM, I didn't have the Google toolbar installed. I do now, but I'll probably uninstall it -- it takes up too much real estate and I don't see the point of it. *shrug*

Can't you use the Shift+Delete method when you get to an online form? You could just leave it blank after deleting.

Yes, although there are a few sites where FF will not let go of the info. It's only a minor frustration and I’m not willing to dump my FF personality to fix it.
