Single drum beat when selecting
« on: September 01, 2008, 12:03:34 AM »
iMac G5 PPC OS 10.4.11

It started a couple weeks ago. Whenever I make a selection, like closing an app, there is a sound of a single drum beat.

Does anybody recognize this?  krissel, the ubiquitous here there and everywhere lady, may be?

I do not recall installing anything new lately, not that I can remember anyway. But then with more and more synapses in my brain disconnecting more and more neurons, who knows, it may very well be that I myself is the culprit. But of what?

She is still here.... wink.gif

I think that is one of the alert sounds (bottle?). Could you have initiated system user interface sound effects?

Sometime certain sounds aren't heard on one machine but are on another. I hear some things on the eMac which do not happen on my DA. Both are running the same install and prefs. Weird.

Thanks krissel. User interface sounds is unchecked. The "single drum beat" sound is unlike any of the sounds in the Sound list.

This one really baffles me.

Check in your System Prefs in the "Other" area and see what you may have there.

Or...

Also look elsewhere for any system changing applications like Tinkertool.

artie505 at MacFixit Forums provided the answer to my problem.

It was to trash the com.apple.systempreferences.plist.

Result: No more "single drum beat".

Glad you found a solution though it may be temporary. Whatever caused it in the first place may do it again.  I always hesitate in telling people to dump that plist cause it means resetting a whole bunch of stuff, at least in my case.  smile.gif

Well it has started again. I have posted the problem on the Apple Discussion forum.
May be somebody can find an answer to permanently fix this problem.

I was afraid it would return.

Do you get this in every application including the Finder?  On every action you take?

Create a new user, log out and into it and see if it is still there. That at least would narrow it down to something that is in your User folder rather than the System.

Are you using the mouse when these sounds happen or your keyboard?

Do this, hit your control key twice in rapid succession. Do you hear it?  Try other keys.
