New MacBook Pro With A Funky Keyboard
« on: October 21, 2008, 11:52:54 PM »
Well, I received my new 2.4 GHz MBP yesterday from Amazon. Perfect screen, a really smart looking machine.

I replaced the 2GB with 4GB from OWC. When I booted it up the first time it chimed three times and then it began beeping and a small light flashed on the front edge. Rebooted and just got the beeping/flashing light. I quickly discovered that the beeping/flashing light was the MBP trying to tell me that its RAM was ill.  Reseated the RAM (the top stick was just a tad out of its slot...) and rebooted.

It started-up, I used Migration Assistant to move over all of my data. Rebooted again.  Everything was fine for less than 15 minutes when I suddenly realized that the keyboard was not working.  The trackpad and button worked, and so did external input devices. I never could get the internal keyboard to work yesterday.

Fast-forward to this afternoon... Started it up and Still No Joy.  The keyboard did not work, period.  So I thought that I would install all the pending updates including moving from 1.5.2 to 1.5.5. What The Heck!

After the Mac rebooted the internal keyboard worked in a halting fashion. Then it just began working. I haven't tried typing anything lengthy, just tried various keys, deleted lines of text (the delete key would not work yesterday and kind of "stuttered" immediately after the updates), etc. I've used it with and without the battery.

So Here I Sit, wondering what to do next... return it to Amazon?  Call Apple? From what I have read online the keyboard problem has been experienced by others and Apple even posted a software update to fix unresponsive keyboards. (Unfortunately, when I tried to install the update I was informed that it was already installed.)

I initially though that I could return the Mac to Amazon for an exchange or refund because I read that Amazon accepts DOA computer returns. Then I got to thinking that a balky keyboard probably doesn't qualify as DOA, technically-speaking...

Then I found this at Amazon:

"All computers sold by Amazon.com are supported by the computer's manufacturers. In the unlikely event a computer appears to be defective, customers are directed to contact the customer support networks of the individual computer manufacturer to have it serviced under warranty."

So it looks like I will just have to Wait and See if it screws up again!

If it's a known Apple Problem then you shouldn't have any trouble with service for a year. You may even get a recall in the future if any aspect is hardware related.

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Why wait? Just because you used MA doesn't mean you've also added tonnes of new work. The longer you wait, the more stress you'll suffer from waiting for that 'other shoe!' laugh.gif And you've still got current work on the 'old' machine, anyway, right? How long do you want to keep those in sync? dntknw.gif

I don't suppose there are any keyboard wiring harness/tape visible/accessible to disruption when inserting those RAM sticks... Thinking.gif

Good luck, in any case, of course.

And I'll not mention that this could have been easily avoided by buying one of the newly released models...not me! I'll never rub anyones nose in the dirt because of those kinds of irrational, emotional 'decisions' which lead to well known consequences that are then whined about in public places...no sir, not me...NEVah! tease.gif

Did you boot up the MBP at all before installing the new RAM? Just a thought...bad RAM isn't unheard of.

Good point. Of course, now that it seems to be working ok, there isn't any way to test by swapping the OWC RAM out...unless it goes wonky again.

Jim - methinks Mayo wanted the MBP with the matte screen. wink.gif

To begin with, I am typing this on the MBP.  The keyboard is working as it should, but you would think that for what I paid it would also improve my typing skills...!

The Woman of My Dreams aka My Lovely Wife said the same thing to me yesterday... Kindly understand that she doesn't know nor care jack about computers.  But she has obviously absorbed something during all the years I would sometimes describe in (I now realize...) painful detail my myriad trouble-shooting sessions with my Macs pre-OS X.

In hindsight running it with the OEM RAM during the "break-in period" would have eliminated one possible cause, but as Paddy wrote it's a moot point unless the keyboard acts up again. In that case I will likely swap the RAM modules; I'll hang onto the old sticks longer than I had planned in case I need them.  (I have had bad RAM twice in the past: an iBook stick and its replacement.  I doubt that it's the RAM; I have never heard of this kind of problem being associated with faulty RAM. At the same time the Mac is not exhibiting any other glitch that I would attribute to rotten RAM.

On the other hand there are more than a few reports on the official Apple forums regarding MBP keyboard woes...

I did get this weird "foot-light" effect last night immediately after disconnecting the power cable. It was as if some of the screen backlighting had been dialed-down unevenly. Restarting fixed it. I attribute it to a mysterious power fluctuation and I'm not worrying about it unless it repeats.

There is a ribbon cable visible next to the RAM slots and I think that it is connected to the keyboard/trackpad.  I didn't touch it but I will take a look at it.  Some of the folks reporting keyboard malfunctions have noticed that pressing down on the trackpad "fixes" the keyboard.

Jim, my "old" machine is staying put; the MBP is now my back-up Mac. My wife has taken over the iBook, which is fine by me because it cannot run some of the programs I need to use... The 24"iMac needs its LCD replaced under warranty, so it is going into the shop next week while the MBP takes its place.  If the keyboard should go belly-up I know that I can keep using the MBP with the USB keyboard currently attached to the iMac.

Paddy is correct: I got the previous-generation MBP for its matte screen, superior keyboard (ironic, isn't it?) and the $550 price discount.

BTW, right now I am using the MBP at our dining room table while my wife does her morning crossword puzzle. There is a light fixture hanging over the table... If I was using a new "glassy" screen MacBook I would be unable to see the display because of the glare. The matte screen is just fine. There are times when it is neither possible nor convenient to rearrange one's environment in order to accommodate using a computer.
