Entourage e mail addresses
« on: October 23, 2008, 12:30:12 PM »
During this whole episode with the IMAC (my wife's computer) her greatest concern was her e mail addresses. (couple of hundred).  I kept re-assuring her not to worry because I had everything backed up.(Yea riiiite) blush-anim-cl.gif  Well she wanted a demo and ya know what I could NOT find them on the BU Disk wallbash.gif.

We have different versions of Office due to networking issues So when I launch Entourage on the  BU drive connected to the laptop it brings up my stuff. Can anyone tell me where I might find those things on the Back-up drive????

Daryl, Entourage stores everything in a single database (one of the reasons lots of people don't like it) - the addresses are not in a separate file of their own.

Documents->Microsoft User Data->Identities->Main Identity (or Office X Identity - I have both and everything is in the Office X identity)->Database.

It should be in there somewhere - you'll just have to figure out which Identity file etc. Look at the size of the database file - that should be a clue. If it's only 144k or something, it's not the one you're looking for.

BTW - see if she'll consider switching to Mail. I did after Entourage started having major corruption issues. If that ONE database gets messed up, you're in trouble. I'm a much happier Mail user now - after years of using Entourage.

I think what Paddy is suggesting, is that, by using Apple's Mail, you and your wife can keep he addresses (and all other important 'contact' info) in a completely separate app/file and still have it immediately available in the email program. Since you already have Mail, it should be a simple matter of exporting the 'address' info to a file and have Address Book import it for you. Then, you'll already be ready to go in Mail! Well, 90%, anyway. You'll probably want to edit/delete some of those 'contacts!' wink.gif

Paddy may also have other advantages, I've never used Entourage/Office/etc., so I can't compare ease-of-use or stability problems with those MS products. dntknw.gif I delayed switching to Mail for several years because of my 'friendship' with Eudora. There are always differences in how similar apps work and there will be habits that will need to change or forgot. But there are also things that are easier for less 'geeky' users and I cannot deny that the close harmony between Mail and Address Book is very nice! smile.gif

Export Entourage contacts
Microsoft Entourage can export your contacts in a tab-delimited text file that you can modify and import into other programs.
1. On the File menu, click Export.
2. Follow the steps in the Export Assistant.

You can keep contacts in a tab-file or create a new identity and import your backup into it.

I have used Entourage for years without worry. I can move data to and from my blackberry with PocketMac and access any backup file without fuss. Don't let them scare you, wink.gif I have used MAIL and Eudora and pound for pound there is no comparison. The feature rich Entourage when incorporated with Office is simply the best email client on the Mac Market. smile.gif

I do not even remember why we went to Entourage it must have happened way back in Office 2000.

I have followed ALL of the advise. Imported to Mail, AND Exported to a separate file, so I should be covered.  Getting left brain and right brain on the same wavelength sometimes is challenging. Devilish2.gif   I am working on it.

Thanks loads

If you use MS Office.... Entourage is a must. It ties all the various programs together under Categories and Projects which eliminates many hours of searching and reformatting from task to task. If you don't have Office then Apple Mail will do. I can include email in spreadsheets and seen it to PC without formatting problems among other stuff that Mail just doesn't handle smoothly. If you plan on using an iPhone http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1670 it sync just fine. wink.gif
