Early this year I upgraded to 10.4.11 from 10.3.9 on my dual G4. I had purchased an install DVD from an online retailer.
Still not ready for 10.5 for many reasons. I also upgraded my wife's eMac from the same DVD.

Although I don't use it much, I want to upgrade my iBook G4 1.25GHz. Tried using the same install DVD. It loads and says it's a blank DVD. Which suggests that it won't work on my iBook. Bummer.

So, where's the best place to buy another install DVD? I'm not into piracy, but want a good price. And how do I make sure the DVD I buy is will work for the iBook? Seems one can get fooled easily?!

You could try to do an install via FW target disk mode.

1. Put DVD in G4 or eMac.

2. Shut down iBook. Put iBook on AC power. Connect with FW cable.

3. Start up G4/eMac in target disk mode (hold t on start) until FW symbol shows

4. Start up iBook. The hard drive of the G4/eMac and the install disk will show up on the iBook's desktop.

5. Run installer from disk.

This is somewhat the reverse of what one would normally do to use FWTDM but in this case there is more of the possibility that by installing booted from the iBook it will install laptop related files. Then again if the disk you have is from an eMac or other kind of PPC it may not have those files on it anyway. If for some reason you can't get it to run the installer, reverse the above so the G4/eMac is the host and the iBook the target.

You could also try an install using a disk image or perhaps even just a SuperDuper clone of your eMac or G4 to the iBook. Again, you might be missing some laptop related files such as for battery/energy control but it's worth a shot. I cloned my Panther install from my 9600 to my Wallstreet and it worked just fine.

Thanks Krissel. Something's not working...
No install Disk shows on the iBook desktop.

When you say do it the other way around and the G4 is the host, isn't that what I just did where the FW icon shows on the G4 screen and the target is the iBook where I can see the iBook HD icon? Can you walk me through the reverse procedure, please?

Also, how do I shut off the G4 when all I see is the FW icon?

Let's continue this route, cause I have no idea what you mean about disk image or SuperDuper clone. KIS!

If ~~Paddy~~Krissel says it should work with the first way she mentioned, I'll not argue with her. But my understanding of FireWire mode was that it would enable another computer to see the one started in FW Mode to be seen as simply another hard drive. If that's the case, you should start up the G4/eMac normally (not in FW Mode) but start the iBook in FW Mode. That should allow the iBook's HD to appear as just another drive on the G4 or eMac. You should then be able to install Tiger on that drive. The problem, of course, is that the installer may not be 'smart enough' to see that the drive belongs to a laptop and you may not get all the required files installed. You may be able to avoid that by using the "Custom" button and checking what is normally being installed. Look for any files that may be laptop related that are not "checked" and check the boxes to be sure they will be installed. This is also a great way to not install the many foreign languages that you don't feel will be useful on any computer.

The above is basically the same as Paddy's 'alternative' or "other way around" method, AFAIK. I'm sure she'll be back soon to help un-confuse you/me!

I think that IAWJ on this one... The iBook should be placed in FW Disk Mode. Run the installer on the other Mac. The iBook volume should appear within the installer program as an option for installing Tiger.

Kindly note that I have never actually done this, just read about it... I have a G4 iBook with a dead optical drive and I've been considering upgrading it to Leopard via this method. (Maybe I should do it sooner than later and then I can sell my Tiger DVD!)

)my initial instructions are the opposite of what one would normally do but it was intended to allow special files for the notebook to possibly be installed since that would be the computer 'in charge' of installation at the time.

The fact that you can't see the install disk on the desktop of the iBook when it is in the G4 and the G4 is in FWTDM it probably means the install disk is particular to the G4/eMac line. That means the iBook won't recognize it so you may have to do it the 'normal' way.

My procedure was based on Option 2 in this Apple article where specific files would not be installed in the intended computer if done the usual way. The computer with 'DVD drive' in this example would be the G4 and the one with the "CD drive" would be the iBook.

If the install disk does not show then it isn't recognized by the iBook so you then have to resort to the 'normal' procedure spelled out here:

Now, if you have a good install already on the G4 and you would like to clone it to the iBook, all you have to do is use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to have an exact copy on the iBook. Of course you might miss a few files indigenous to the iBook but as I mentioned earlier, I've done that with my Wallstreet and Panther and it works fine.

One other thing to try is to make a dmg of the install drive using Disk Utility and copy that to the iBook. Then see if you can use that to install to the iBook, though I would doubt it would work if not a retail install.

As to the drive that is in FW disk mode, you will drag it to the trash to eject the drive. Then restart (keyboard if you have that option) or use the button to shut down by holding.

I did it the reverse way and it worked! Love it when that happens.
I'm using 10.4.11 now on my iBook. :-)
Unfortunately I installed everything. I didn't see any CUSTOM options. But no matter.

When I first opened Mail, it transfered(?) all my email messages.
I'm out of town now as we speak and using wireless internet.
I'm receiving email but it won't allow me to SEND.
My messages are stuck in the OUT Box.

What do I have to adjust to make that work?

The reason you are unable to SEND is because you are probably not connected through your normal ISP. Had the same 'problem' during my recent trip.
If your ISP / email account has an internet connection / site you might be able to go there and use your account to send off your email. Or if you have a Yahoo or Gmail account you can send from them.

Bob is correct that you are encountering the problem because you are not connecting to the Internet via your usual ISP. Many wireless access points block data from the default SMTP port 25 that is used to send e-mail in order to prevent spammers from using the Wi-Fi spot for their nefarious activities.

You have two options: contact your ISP and find out what alternative port you can use when traveling. If you plan on using your Mac away from home on a regular basis you can just switch to the alternate port permanently. Or access your e-mail account on the Web if that option is available to you.

There may yet be another option.

Most ISP's have a home web page and if you search around you will likely find "web mail" opening that page will ask you for your account name and password.(same as your e mail client uses) If you can remember that you should be able to both send and receive your emails

Switching to the alternative port is more convenient than accessing Web-based e-mail.

Raven, your ISP may provide the alternative port info in a FAQ at its Web site. Otherwise you will have to call or e-mail your ISP for the information.

This a good opportunity to remind folks that using public Wi-Fi and wired networks is a security risk unless you use a public VPN server such as Witopia's personalVPN.

Raven I've been considering moving to Tiger for sometime, but i have so many application, both in OS 9 and Panther, that I have no disk images or CD/DVD's for that I'm leery. Over 100 applications that may or may not work in Tiger and the though of ruining a perfectly good working tool, just to see applications through a different format seems to be a risk not worth taking. I don't know if my Adobe Suite, Quark, MSOffice. FileMaker, iListen or Virtual PC software will move smoothly from Panther to Tiger. Or if I should just jump to Leopard and bypass Tiger altogether.

I'm interested in seeing how much trouble it would be to use the Erase & Install option then import the applications and files from backup. I've read some about the issue, and most say reinstall the applications afterwards, but if you don't have all the years of collective software and updates in disk image or hard copy this is not an option. Some of my software in hard copy goes back to Jaguar, that has been updated over and over again, much is shareware or addon apps that i have no idea where it came from.

I found Tiger to be a significant improvement over Panther, particularly on my older Macs. Is there really so much of a difference that some apps need major upgrades in order to be compatible with Tiger? I do not recall having any problems of that kind...

SB, if you have a bootable clone of your current OS set-up on an external drive you can upgrade the external and test it. If things work fine then you can upgrade your Mac; if not, at least you will know where you have potential problems. (Of course, it means buying or borrowing a copy of Tiger...) I upgraded my external with Leopard and ran my Mac from it for a week before I used SuperDuper! to copy the external to my internal. Worked Like A Charm.

The differences between Tiger and Leopard aren't very compelling to me if we're talking about upgrading a PPC Mac. Even on an Intel Mac an upgrade isn't essential but there are some nice new features, especially on Intel Macs.

Going from Panther to Leopard is definitely going to be problematic; I think that it is safe to assume that more than a few of your apps will need to be upgraded if you went go that route.

Filemaker Pro 7 works fine in Tiger. I don't think I found any apps that didn't make the move from Panther to Tiger when I upgraded a year ago. All has worked really solidly.

Just tested VPC 6 with XP and it works fine.
