I am looking for an inexpensive way to salvage the HD from the Broken IMAC. Will this guy do the job??enclosure I  realize there is no firewire.

My first thought was avoiding fan noise but from reading the 'reviews' it apparently doesn't have one. While that keeps the size as small as possible, it's probably also why it is meant to stand edge-wise on the desk. If you get it, I would suggest giving it plenty of room to allow air to circulate freely. Of course, your internal iMac drive may run a lot cooler than the ones mentioned in the 'reviews.' E-SATA may be more useful than FW, anyway. dntknw.gif

Daryl, I would not buy a drive enclosure with that many BAAAD reviews. 37% gave it a 1, 11% gave it a "2" and only 36% really liked it. So, not a good bet. NewEgg's reviews are always pretty helpful, I find.

Either you have to decide which type of external drive you want  to have and hope that it has some longevity, or you can hedge your bets like I did and cover most of the bases (USB 2.0, FW 400 & eSATA) with this one:

I've been VERY happy with mine - it's got my main drive in it right now while I wrangle with Apple over my G5. On the G5, I had installed a RAID card with 2 external eSATA ports - and it was wonderfully fast. Of course...my MBP can't use that, so I'm on FW right now.

Good enclosure, looks cool (I have 3 different external enclosures from 3 different companies, and all of which are a variation on the design of the G5, which wasn't entirely intentional on my part!) and very reasonable price. And 83% gave it a "5" at Newegg.

Does that enclosure have a fan, couldn't tell from the specs? While it does mention two different 'stands' they aren't shown. I'd really have a unit that lies flat on the desk (with out charring the wood!) but I'd think it should have a fan to keep things cool. That's about the same price as the one I have now for my wife's external but she complains about the fan noise. Mine is from OWC and cannot be heard. Period. But it was also more expensive...

Yessir I agree.  This one looks much better, and only a few dollars more.

ABD: It appears that that one does not have a fan.  Uses the case as a "heat sink". I have an external "Fantom" drive that works the same way.  It does get plenty warm but I only crank it up for back-up, so it does not run continuously.  So far no issues.

Too bad. Not good for continuous running nor placing flat on any solid surface, I fear. Still, I'll await word from Paddy for first-hand experience. Great deal for her.  I double checked to see if I could find any sign of leakage on my IMAC G5, but guess it only uses fan(s).  Groaner.gif

 Thought about  putting a drop or two of Prestone on or near the G5 housing, but don't suppose that would fool anybody huh??? toothgrin.gif

I have had 3 non-fan externals (250gb, 120gb, & 160gb) in OWC clear / vertical mounted enclosures running continuously for about 2 years now without a single problem or hiccup....  YMMV.

That's great but I don't want vertical I want horizontal, ie; 'stack stuff on top of this.' smile.gif Right now, there are two 1.5 inch think books stacked on top of the external enclosure so her video cam can see over her laptop. inspect.gif And that camera is not made to 'straddle' anything. It needs to sit on a flat surface at least three inches square. Therefore, I need/want a flat, horizontal, non-vertical, box. I don't think I'd trust one like that without a fan. Thus I await the testimony from our Canadian "Power Mac" ("who needs anti-freeze?") user! wink.gif

Actually, I'm camped out waiting for UPS to take the old beast back. They need to get that first - but things are moving along quickly. Should be here next week some time. smile.gif Er...the Mac Pro, that is, not UPS!! tongue.gif

No fans in that Macally case - it's very quiet and I keep it upright in the stand, so no worries at all about heat. It's got an additional wider bottomed stand it just sits in (which I use) or you can put the feet on it to make it less tippy. See the photos at the bottom of the page here:

You can lay them on their sides too - but I like to conserve space, so they're upright - lined up like a bunch of boxcars in a railroad siding. With the Airport sitting on top right now, since it lost its perch atop the G5 down beside the desk. (We also discovered this weekend that simply putting it on the desk, instead of on top of the G5, improved the wireless reception a whole lot for my son's iMac upstairs. Weird...it was a big 18" move at the most...)

These days, there are very few enclosures with fans - and they're usually the big ones designed for a RAID where multiple hard drives create lots of heat which is hard to dissipate without a fan.

If you must have a fan, there are these:

I'm not sure how a fan on the bottom works, unless there are little feet or something that keep it off the surface its sitting on.

If you've got one of the single Mercury Elite drives from OWC, Jim, there are no fans in those either.

I have the miniStack enclosure, I just got mine from OWC. And it is absolutely quiet as is the 1TB Hitachi drive. biggrin.gif: But thanks for the info on the Macally. There's not much use for the space behind her iBook, so that's where I created the 'stand' for the web cam (which I don't think she's ever used! wallbash.gif). There is room for the Macally and an even higher stack of books! So I might just get one...at least SWMBO would enjoy the silence and the Grandkids would still have the web cam. clap.gif

I got within one mouse click of ordering this guy when I looked over at the drive I had taken out and it looked larger than 3.5".  Sure enuff it is 4 inches wide and 6 inches long.  I assumed it must take a 5' enclosure rite??  I cannot seem to find a 5" enclosure that supports "sata".  Am I missing something??  It is a: Seagate Brracuda 7200.7 Model st380013as.  The Seagate spec sheet confirms the physical size.
