What is a "slave" and how did I get one on my hard drive? Do I need it, can I get rid of it, and if I have to keep it will it do housework?

Trish, There are several definitions. Is one of these whatcha had in mind?

* A computer or peripheral device controlled by another computer. For example, a terminal or printer in a remote location that only receives data is a slave. When two personal computers are hooked up via their serial or parallel ports for file exchange, the file transfer program may make one computer the master and the other the slave

* In computer networking, master/slave is a model for a communication protocol in which one device or process (known as the master) controls one or more other devices or processes (known as slaves). Once the master/slave relationship is established, the direction of control is always from the master to the slave(s)

* Computer or peripheral device that operates under the control of another computer peripheral.

* A setting commonly adjusted using a jumper found on a computer peripheral, such as a hard disk drive. This setting sets the drive to be the secondary drive and allows for multiple devices to be connected to a single connection.

FWIW, a really smart slave never does windows.

Yikes Harv, I will give you a little background.....I noticed this "slave" Sunday. I spent my Mother's Day with my iBook....I went to the Apple store earlier in the day and they kindly downloaded the updates and burned them on a CD for me. I came home and decided I would re-partition, and start all over from scratch....I'd done it once a few months ago and came up with 3 partitions and only wanted two. So this time I ended up with one big partition and a small "slave." (Now remember, I'm Apple/Mac challenged

) I installed/upgraded everything and all seems to be working well, so I will probably just leave it alone, unless I find out this could be a problem.....trish

Trish, Me thinks thou art being too modest. Anyone who ventures forth to partitioning their drives is (IMNHO) for sure out the Newbie category. You go gal!

A "Slave" Partition is a new one on me. Whatever.

Kelly, I read that article from your link, and I know I didn't do any of that to get that "slave" in there.....I guess I will just leave it alone for now. It doesn't take up that much space and hasn't created any problems.

I'm far from being advanced in the world of Mac's, but I do have fun trying things out. I don't think I would be as brave if it were my only computer......I really would love to find a place around here to take a class, but this is a good place to learn little by little
