Can't open .pkg files in OS 10.2.0
« on: May 15, 2003, 09:48:09 PM »
As some of you may know, I ahve had a series of disasters in updating into OS 10.2.x, mainly my laser printer won't print in OS 10.2.5 or 10.2.6. However it works fine in 10.2.4.

So my workaround has been to :

  1) archive install OS 10.2.0 from my only OS X CD over the existing OS 10.2.6 system - worked like a charm

  2) Download OS 10.2.1 updater and update to 10.2.0 to 10.2.1

  3) Run the 10.2.4 combo updater and update 10.2.1 to 10.2.4 (10.2.4 combo update will only work with 10.2.1 -
      10.2.3

Sounds pretty straightforward - won't have to reinstall much of the additional software, right? WRONG!

The problem is I can't open any .pkg file. What happens is when I try to open a .pkg file, something called Installer loads and then nothing happens. Going into the Installer menu I see I have a choice of three versions of Installer, none of which worked. So here I am again stuck but I am stubborn wallbash.gif and now turn to me TS friends to help me. My guess I am doing something wrong with .pkg files but I have no diagnostics.

A second issue is that when I try to open a .dmg file by double clicking I Iget an error message:" Disk Copy helper file unexpectedly terminated". Sometimes a restart fixes the problem. Other times if I open Disk Copy first and then try to open the .dmg file , it opens??

So here I am again, in trouble and running back to Mom and Dad TS for a rescue.

Thanks,

Mama The Damn Mad Moose

What packages are you trying to install?

Maybe the system thinks you already installed them? Have a look here:

/Library/Receipts

for the same packages you're trying to install.

I SOLVED IT! rolleyes.gif

I fortuantely checked the Apple Knowlewdge Base and found the answer: For reasons unbeknownst to me,  when I clicked on a .pkg file it opened up a "rogue Installer"!!! The correct Installer to use is in the App folder.
When I did that, then I was uble to upodate myself back to OS 10.2.4 clap.gif

Now if I could figure out the .pkg was connected to opening the wrong Installer.
