G3 Beige USB PCI Card
« on: May 17, 2003, 10:11:44 AM »
It’s pretty much a toss up on what will work with these supplemental cards, and I’ve had my share of of them. Most recently trying to upload pictures from a digital camera I’ve discovered they just don’t work. I’ve thought to purchase a ZiO smartcard reader, but there is no guarantee that it would either, trial and error is the only option that I’ve found. I know some of you have had success with these contraptions, but as I look around the web I’m discovering more conflict than cooperation.

I’ve tried various software configurations from Apple, and no matter which USB version I’ve installed the card/s often can’t be seen, or they can perform only certain functions and not the whole spread of options, like the Brother 5-in-1 will print/fax from the desktop but will not scan to the desktop. It seems, from my experience anyway, that the PCI route is one way, going out, and uploading data through that path, whether scans  or pictures, is a bust.

This problem could be in part to my having a Rev A G3, although some say NO. It’s a mixed bag with no clear solution. If anyone  knows of a solution, a link to a fix, or a way to determine out-front if a card/driver will work or not I would appreciate it.

Thanks  B)

SB. I think many things that apply to the 6400 apply to your machine. smile.gif

I recommend to KISS.

A two port USB Card seems to work the best.

Macally and Belkin especially.

Had an old xlr8 in my 6400 that worked with everything I tried.

Don't have a Digital Camera though. smile.gif

Sandbox,

I have a Keyspan in my Beige G3 and have had it in there for a long time and haven't had any trouble with it on OS9.1.

I don't have a digital camera either though. It scans, prints, burns CDs etc.

USB support extension 1.4.6.

CompUSA firewire/USB card in my 9600. The USB has been very reliable with 7 port Asante hub connected. To that, my Lexar card reader, MS Intellimouse and 4G drive in external USB/firewire case (old drive from PB). Have also connected 80G OWC firewire/USB2 external on occasion, too. The firewire ports never worked though. Have separate Firewire Direct card for that.

No special drivers, just works. The external drives needed the mass storage USB extension but otherwise no problems.

I think it is a gamble but at least they are cheap enough these days.

Hey, thanks folks!
I have three different cards, a SIG 5, a something else?, and a Belkin 4 that is installed now, and for the longest time the Brother’s scanner wouldn’t scan to the desktop. The instructions say it won’t, as does the instructions on the Olympus Camera, (Built-in USB Required) but, I took Kelly’s advice. I KISSED the OS9.2 CD and loaded a fresh batch of extensions, Bingo, a Drive icon appeared on the desktop. rolleyes.gif So much for all that USB development software. sad.gif I flipped over to the other partition to see if OS 9.1 would work and it did without adjustment, so it was operators error all the while.

I sure would like to figure out how to see the 5 in 1 Brother’s scanner, and since these instructions don’t tell the whole truth there might just be a way? blink.gif
