Screen Wakes up at Inopportune Times!
« on: May 18, 2003, 08:08:42 PM »
Hello!

I have a rather odd problem this time.  At night I use my Mac to play ocean waves.  (Works like a charm by the way! smile.gif)  I have the screen set to black out after 5 minutes of inactivity, which of course it does.  The weird thing is that the screen will suddenly come on in the middle of the night!  As near as I can tell there is no pattern to when it will turn back on.  I thought perhaps it might be my mouse, so I unhooked it but no luck.  Then I thought it might be my USB fan somehow.  That wasn't it either.  Last night I unplugged everything USB and still the screen turns on at weird times.  The only user app that I have running at the time is Audion.

I know this is a BIG long shot but does anyone have any ideas as to what to check next?

Thanks,

Sleepy Catrina...

What OS are you running? What is this sounds? Running in iTunes? Is it running when the monitor comes back on? Which mac?

Can you just turn the monitor off?

I don't know..just throwing out ideas here...

Catrina,

If you're running OS X, the waking up could be the operating system running it's cron scripts.

Maybe you could rig up a blackout cover to put in front of the monitor. I use one of those to cover a monitor in the darkroom where I output printing plates and film. The material I work with is very light sensitive and the blackout cover is the only way to make the room dark enough to take unexposed plates and film out of the boxes.

Leave it to me to leave out important things like which OS I'm using!   blush-anim-cl.gif

My machine is a dual 800 with Apple's 17" flat screen.  (So I really can't turn off the monitor.)  I'm on the latest OS X (10.2.6).  My ocean waves are from a mp3 and I use Audion to play it.  (iTunes STILL doesn't have an alarm, Audion does however.)  I've never had any trouble with the screen waking like this except for the last several weeks.

This cron thing is an interesting idea.  Perhaps something I installed recently is causing this.  Is there a command for listing all cron processes?

Thanks for your suggestions so far!  smile.gif

Why they were'nt running before I don't know.

Maybe Cocktail will let you run them during the day?

Last night I thought I would try to temporarily fix the problem by using an astronomy app that turns the screen red.  (NightVision X.)  I set it to its lowest setting so when the screen woke up it would be almost black anyway.  The funny thing is that when the screen did turn on (at 4:00 in the morning naturally) the screen was NOT red and was at full brightness!!!  (I had set the brightness to the lowest level before.)  It exhibits normal behavior if I wait for the screen to black out and then wake it up.  (I.e. its still red and at low brightness.)  Very weird indeed...

Thanks for the links Kelly!  smile.gif  I'll give those a try and hopefully they will fix whatever this wacko problem is!
