Combo pcmcia card OS 9...
« on: February 07, 2009, 08:48:55 AM »
Hi

Just bought an ADVANCE pcmcia combo card firewire/usb   ...compatible OS 8.6 or above on the seller's site but it doesn't  work on my Wallstreet OS 9.2.

Do you know a real working one for OS 9..?

Thanks

This IOGear one is supposed to work with 8.6 and 9.2: IOGEAR USB 2.0 / FireWire Combo CardBus Card (GUF202)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/8006...#specifications

http://guide.apple.com/action.lasso?-datab...897&-search

MacWarehouse in the UK has it:

http://www.macwarehouse.co.uk/catalogue/item/IOGEA38

I'll leave searching for it in France up to you, though - on IOGear's web site they don't list any European resellers (except the UK) and the link to the one French distributor, Comtrade, produces a 404 error. So, you may have to order from the UK if you decide to get this card.

In OS 9, do you just want to use the card for USB?

On some Macs when you install OS 9, if no USB device is installed, the necessary USB software is not installed. Suggest you reinstall OS 9.x.
Cheers, Tom

Ah - good point, Tom! I'd forgotten about that little issue. I'm too used to OS X. wink.gif

Try reinstalling 9, ADSR, before giving up on the card. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to just install the missing USB drivers.

Ah, so it's not the USB drivers that are missing. Do you have the model number and name of the new card, and can you look it up on the manufacturer's web site? I tried Googling "Advantage PCMCIA" and a few variants, but couldn't find any combo cards by that name.

Otherwise, I'd give the IOGear one a whirl - unless that was the one you tried last year!

Unfortunately, you're looking for hardware for a laptop that was discontinued over 10 years ago, running an operating system that debuted 9.5 years ago - in computer years, that's a very long time and manufacturers can't be expected to continue to support something that a fast-dwindling number of people continue to use, and remain in business. That's their economic reality - though it may be quite different from yours! tongue.gif

Have you tried eBay by any chance?

Give these <"guys"> a call (877-639-1543), they specialize in maintaining very old equipment, even Apple ][ stuff! They may just know of a brand that will work in your more modern computer. I know both the owners, personally and if they don't have what you need, they may know where to get it or even how to get your card to work. smile.gif BTW, I get no remuneration for sending customers to them! Their just good "guys!" wink.gif

The first one bought on ebay last year was a SYBA combo card, the last one on a web store is an  Advent...
Both were suposed to work on OS9 in their description on ebay or french seller web site but they didn't sad.gif
They sure work on OSX or window as seen on their package...
For the third buy... unsure.gif
Tryed to go to http://resale.headgap.com/ but can't enter the store from the welcome page...

Thanks for your help

I have  FW and USB pcmcia cards and both fit in the Wallstreet at the same time. The Wallstreet has two slots and if the cards are not too fat two can fit.

Are yours that thick?

My USB card is very thin and has a dongle which hangs out and away allowing the thicker FW card to fit.

Check this out:

In your case the USB card would be the one on top.

Found an older  thinner usb pcmcia  in my mac's attic , now both can fit in the wallstreet ,thick firewire one on top but the installation is a little delicate and the dongle of the usb one on the lower slot has some weakness.

A combo (working ) one would be better...

Not sure what the problem is/was at "Headgap." Clicking "Enter store" should have worked as well as just about any other link. My biggest concern is that usually work with much older machines and OSs! I'm not sure they have info on anything as new as you need! smile.gif

Error page! I only checked the site with my desktop Safari and the one on my iPhone. dntknw.gif FF 3.0.1 works fine...

I don't know, but they handle/maintain/repair very old Macs and they would be likely to know of a unit that would work for old machines. But yours is actually new compared to some that they maintain! smile.gif

Looking at their 'catalog,' I see only one PCMCIA card. It only supplies two FW400 ports, so it's definitley not what you are looking for. However, there is a "READ THIS BEFORE ORDERING!" note that says one must "disable 'Allow Processor Cycling' in the Energy Saver Control Panel under OS8/9." Not sure that even applies in your case but it's something to consider? dntknw.gif

I'll make a note to simply call these "guys' tomorrow and tell them what you're looking for and if they know of a brand that works. They have an 800 number but I'm not sure if that includes International calls. smile.gif I'll let you know what they say.
