Generic G4 Tiger Install Disc
« on: February 08, 2009, 04:58:45 PM »
Perhaps a slightly stoopid question:

Being aware that most new Apple's have been supplied with machine-specific OS Install disks for a long while now...  A while back I got a Tiger 10.4  "PowerMac G4" install disk from a seller on eBay. I determined that the disk was not original, and frankly, I don't know whether it's actually G4 specific or someone messed with the graphics to make it look real. I didn't pay a lot for it, so I informed the seller and let it go at that. It installed 10.4 on my G4 DA no problem.

Any chance that this might install on a G5? Or is there a significant difference in the G5 architecture that it won't install? Never worked with a G5, so I dunno... Thinking.gif

TIA,

Chris K

If it really is a G4 disk, chances are very good that it won't install on a G5. Just like an iMac disk won't install on a G4 etc. Now, that's not to say cloning from an external drive won't work; I know Kris did that.

I last time I did something like this was with 10.3 and that worked (eMAC cd on iBook) but I've had regular 10.4 and 10.5 DVD's since then.  Good luck!

Direct install from the DVD will probably be refused as Paddy said.  But my cloned Leopard from an Intel MBP works just fine on my PPC G4 tower.  toothgrin.gif

That's pretty cool Kris!

Well, I'm going to just wait until I have the G5 in my hands to try it out, and if necessary, I'll install and clone, way cool that you can go cross-architecture that way! thumbup.gif

Thank you, Queen of Cloning! Look.gif
