CyberPatrol is, unfortunately, still around.
There's an interesting story about CyberPatrol, much of which you can read at spamfire.org and theregister.co.uk. In a nutshell, CyberPatrol is published by a British company, Surf Patrol Inc, which is run by fundamentalist Christians.
In addition to blocking "adult" sites, CyberPatrol also blocks:
- Sites that publish negative financial information or shareholder reports about Surf patrol Inc.
- Sites that publish material that promotes religions other than Christianity (both the New York Jewish Teen Center and the Holocaust Museum's Web sites have been blocked in the past by CyberPatrol, though public pressure has forced them to be removed from the list of blocked sites).
- Sites that publish reviews of Internet filtering software, if they don't give high ratings for CyberPatrol
- Political campaign sites and sites belonging to Senators or Representatives who oppose laws that require public libraries to use filtering software
- Islamic sites
and so on. Surf Patrol is, in my opinion, an extremely unethical company that wilfully and wantonly abuses the trust that is put in it by the people who use its software.
