Need Windoze for just one app.
« on: May 17, 2009, 02:36:05 PM »
I just would love to have the Xenodream fractal program, and Ive found a class in it,,,,,,,,,,but I dont have a MacTel yet.
So I was thinking of buying a little "netbook" like the one our daughter has, the little thing seems to be able to do everything with photos and images.
Though I know very very little about PCs.

My plan would be to purchase Xenodream and run it on the little netbook and then move my images over to the Macs to finish them with Photoshop. Thus I would not have to buy Parallels, or Vista or whatever the MacTel would need for a PS OS.  Nor would I have to buy the PC version of Photoshop.

Thinking this could be the cheapest way to accomplish this?

www.xenodream.com
(and also I would love to have UltraFractal later on)

Thanks in advance,
Jane

Unless you can find a very inexpensive PC laying around, I don't think you can get any cheaper than Parallels or Fusion. Either way, you'll need a version of Windows that will run the app. You don't need to buy another version of Photoshop, if you've already got it on your Mac. You don't have to run anything on the Parallels/Fusion partition other than the one app you want/need. And, no matter where you run windows, if the computer is connected to the Internet, it will require anti-virus software.

That sounds even cheaper, just having to buy a version of Windows. I think XP is the least troublesome from what I hear.
I assume that Parallels and Fusion have recommendations for which version works best with their program?

The 2 Fractal programs that I want are stand alone programs, they dont need Photoshop, though some of the plug-ins and third party filters would.
If I had to, I could always get a version of Windows Elements.

The kids could recommend some anti-virus software.  I would only hook to the net while running the Windows side long enough to download the stuff from the Fractal sites.  I guess I could just pull the cable modem plug out while running Parallels once I got the 2 programs downloaded and paid for.
Or perhaps they sell a CD a boxed version.

And I sure dont need another computer around here.  I just gave one away.
Yes, I guess thats the best way, I will be getting a 24 inch iMac next fall.
Thank you.
Jane

Jane, I use the FREE anti-virus software Avast on my Windows XP install (in Parallels). Very good reviews and seems to work well.

I checked out the program site and was intrigued by the admonition to not use VPC on PPC Macs. Well, that only made me want to try. smile.gif

I downloaded the app and installed it in my Virtual PC drive and it ran OK, just a bit slow since it was a virtual environment.

Boy, are you sure you want to use that app?  I've seen complicated programs before but wow...  swoon.gif

Hi Krissel,
You mean Xenodream?  The trial version?
I wonder if I should download it, though I dont have my Intel Mac yet, but I can have it here for the next time the kids come for the weekend, I assume I can download it to a Mac and just have the app waiting for them to bring their laptop.

Yes, I guess its going to be quite a project for me to learn, but Ive found a class in it.
Will tax my old brain next winter.

Yup, downloaded the trial version. It won't let you save anything but I played around, enlarged some stuff and then took selected screens shots of the results. smile.gif

Don't expect the nice, clear, easy to use Apple interface. It's butt ugly at best and lots of palettes and annoying quirks. But if you take a class it should help with all the variables.

The download is a zip that contains the app as an exe. You should be able to just transfer the zip to their PCs, open and install it.

Thank you!  I sure will do that, they will be here on the next nice weekend. It will be fun to play with and then I can look forward to it all next October, or when I get the new MacTel. I will try Ultra Fractal too.
Also looking forward to Parallels, Boot Camp, Fusion or what/which one is preferred. I see that most everybody here likes Parallels best.
I will start asking about that in Oct.

Jane - I looked up on Versiontracker and it had all of these fractal programs:

As noted some are free so you could download them and try them.  Let me know if the link doesn't work!

Gee, some new ones there!
I have Quadrium, Easy Fractal,  and a few others listed here, and KPT and a couple of really old ones not llisted.
FractalWorks I think is new, Ive been using it recently. Made this one with it, and a plugin for Photoshop.
I love Fractals!
Thank you!
