TS unreachable
« on: July 06, 2009, 02:56:18 AM »
We have been notified by Audone that TS was not reachable for a couple hours on the eve of July 4th.  After some investigation it appears that a new search engine was on the site and totally hogged the bandwidth so TS was not available to members.

Hopefully this was a one time event but if anyone ever encounters the following message (or similar) when trying to access TS, please notify one of the admins when you can with date and times. We are monitoring the situation and if this search engine causes problems we will put its IP in an access denial file.

It's Yandex, SB - the #1 Russian search engine, which is now the default search engine in Firefox in Russia (they dumped Google).

No, but I saw its tracks...Groaner.gif

Seriously, I use the Search function here as little as possible, for the same reason I read others who use the same software do. It is just not that useful unless you already know where something is...But I've not had that message in any of the recent hic-ups with TS. However, I suspect it is the same cause for my 'stalls,' server overload. sad.gif

I've not bumped into any message from ASO, but for the past several days I've been having problems loading TS. It's just sluggish and slow. Doesn't happen all the time, and I have yet to see this search engine listed as a visitor on the front page.

I got server unavailable this morning (7:30am-8:30am, CDT).  This was at work so it's barely possible that it was the firewall or something but other websites worked okay!

ASO has had two distinct problems in the past 10 days or so - neither seem to be related to the issues you've had though, SB. I noticed that your site is now current again - did you fix it or did ASO?

John - I stared another thread because it was a completely different issue this time and I didn't want a (we HOPE) one-time massive ASO problem to get mixed up with a potential ongoing issue.

If you are posting about TODAY's problems, please use the other thread. This thread is for reporting any problems related to either denial-of-service or short outages that we can trace via our logs. We're specifically trying to keep an eye on the Russian search engine bot, Yandex.

Paddy they had to fix it and 2 others that were on 4 servers simultaneously.
At 5am 7-7-09 when i first notice the problem the front page of another site was empty.
Then I got an email from ASO dated 2006 asking for an alternative contact address because two of my sites had to be moved to other servers. I didn't know the email was from 2006 until later when I checked the header.
So, if this 2006 email was sent randomly it would relate to some of the experiences that others have had thus far, no?

The moving violation aside.  dry.gif

FWIW, I had trouble accessing threads on TS around 4 AM.  Went into the CPanel on our server and noticed that the previous visitor prior to my login was Yandex. When I reloaded the CPanel page a few minutes later I noticed a new search engine:

http://www.cuil.com/info/webmaster_info/

After about 15 minutes I could read the TS threads. I also noticed that Yandex is accessing virtually once every minute.  dry.gif

I wasn't really even aware of Cuil as a search engine - I'd seen their bots, but never tried the search engine. Can't say I'm terribly impressed having compared its results to Google.

http://www.time.com/time/business/article/...1827331,00.html

One small thing we seem to have lost with the outage is the AW Stats for the past week, so can't see if Yandex has been busy or not. I suspect not - that initial flurry of activity may have been as a result of Firefox switching to Yandex in Russia.

We should check the stats again tomorrow, Kris - if they're still not working we should submit a ticket.
