Joy,Oh Joy!!!

IT PAYS TO BE PATIENT & POLITE!!!!

After 1 hour and 15 minutes on the phone and being 'handed off' 3 times (Customer support - Customer Service Rep. and finally, a Customer Relations Rep. (All english speaking, polite, and VERY helpful)), I will be receiving an NEW 20" Intel iMac. toothgrin.gif

They offered, finally, to replace my dead iMac G5 (3 power supplies and counting, a mother board, and the Combo-drive) with a 'base' Intel iMac.  I agreed and then asked if I could have it 'up-graded' (more memory and larger HDD) at my expense.  They agreed and it was done at the 'education' rate.
I will get 'return' labels from FedEx and as soon as FedEx scans the return label that it is in their possession, the 'new' computer will be on it's way to me..... no need for the 'dead' one to get to Apple 1st.....

Needless to say, I AM VERY HAPPY with the whole experience.....
Now if the stupid squirrels would stop chewing on the overhead cable and knocking out my internet connection!! wallbash.gif wallbash.gif

7 - 10 day wait, but I can do that for a FREE (ABD's favorite price whistling.gif ) computer...

Going to keep my appointment with the Apple Genius tomorrow to have them take the HDD out and then I can mount it in one of my external enclosures (ordered a new enclosure from OWC to have SATA connection) and take care of getting 'things' loaded back to the NEW FREE COMPUTER.....   Things are/were backed up via SD!  and could also use that to download the backuped data....

HAPPY ME!!  toothgrin.gif   Bob K.   rnkiii

Good for you bob!

That's a lot of trouble for one computer to have....though.

I hope you have better luck with your new one.  thumbup.gif

...and they didn't make you sign a non-disclosure type agreement, Bob? They did that to me when they replaced my leaky G5, not that it stopped me from telling people! Perhaps it had something to do with not wanting to be forced into providing some sort of extended warranty for the liquid-cooled G5, although it was absolutely generic and I had the feeling they used it whenever they did replacements.

Anyway, congratulations - I'm sure you'll enjoy the new iMac!

Is there maybe some sort of "lemon" law in effect here?  Having gone through "3" of something certainly is somewhat telling.  I've been inside the 17" with the iSight and of four I've had open only two had power supplies that were manufactured by the same company. This was out of a bunch that had serial #'s that were mostly pretty close to each other.  This might account for it!

No, no NDA as yet or even discussed......  Too late now anyway!! whistling.gif

Yes, it does seem like there were a number of problems, but they seemed to run in 'streaks' with longer periods of 'no problems' in between.
I got it in Jan. of 2005, so 4 1/2 years is a pretty lengthy time for a computer, given that it was 'on' 24/7 for that length of time.  I did point out several times during my phone conversations that the power supply problem was a 'known' problem, but also that I was a 'long time' Apple / Mac user who would NOT consider anything else for my computing use.

I've not gotten any email from FedEx about the return labels as yet, so will wait till Monday, and then see if I can 'prod' them into action.

The external case has been shipped from OWC, so should have that in plenty of time to get the HDD from the G5 installed and ready to move the data to the NEW computer when it arrives.

We're getting rid of most of our iMAC G5's this calendar year and while there is one out of the 83 or so we have that has been really problematic (two bouts of p/s and or logic board replacements, seven G5's that have had something replaced in warranty) they are all out of even the extended warranty now so I'm reluctant to get on Apple about further replacement beyond extended warranty!  I just hope the 20" iMAC Intels prove to be a less problematic design; although their habit of low balling the power supply purchase is probably still happening. If I can't afford a tower (and I can't) I guess I still would go with a Mac Mini just because there is less to go wrong when you take the LCD circuitry out of the mix.

like you i'm leery of combination contraptions. Even in my electronics, I like components. I've have an old mini here on loan that i'm enjoying. My needs are small compared to others so a new mini will suit my purposes and I can select a monitor, keyboard and mouse of my choosing. Simple, small, cool with options, it's hard to beat. wink.gif

if you need service dragging a mini to an apple store seems more appealing.

I'm ahead of you by one more dead powersupply and logic board.

I had my 4th replaced in December, the iMac 20 was about 4 years old also, and its serial # was in that "trouble" zone.
They extended my warantee, and its been OK since.
I think it was a different manufacturer of the parts, on this last repair.

I was told by one Apple rep that I should be eligible for a new computer, but if it worked by being fixed a fourth time, then I had to go that route first.
My local Mac store did the work, and they said that if I had to have paid for it, it would be expensive. They even refunded my $60 analysis fee. Total cost was 0.

Its still hanging in there,,,,,,knock on wood.
