Getting Photoshop CS4 to talk to my Epson scanner?

I may not have all the terminology right...

I just upgraded to Photoshop CS4 on a new iMac.
I did not install the Epson Scan software, because I want to scan from PS.
My old PS7 had a plug-in whereby I could scan from my Epson Perfection 2400.
I downloaded the OSX10.5 Twain driver from Epson. And installed it. I thought.
It doesn't show anywhere in PS File/Import, where it should be.

At the Epson support site, it does mention that PS needs to run in Rosetta mode.
When I "Get Info" on PS, Rosetta is greyed out. Even after I unlock it, Rosetta is still greyed out.

Anything else I can do to make this work properly?

First, you will probably have to Log out or even Restart to get the OS to recognize the plug-in.

Second, I don't use/have Photoshop, but in PS Elements, one selects the TWAIN plug-in or other source in the File->Import menu. My choices are : Anti-aliased PICT..., PICT Resource..., Brother TWAIN..., From from Video... And there is a TWAIN plug-in in the Elements/Plug-Ins/Import Modules folder.

I use a Brother MF machine with PS Elements. I have two TWAIN files on the HD. One created by Adobe. 10.0x001 ©1992-2007! It is located as mentioned above. However, the one I think is really being used is from Brother: /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/Brother TWAIN.ds  Version 3.1.0.  Furthermore, both are "Universal" meaning that they should run, natively, in both a PPC and an intel Mac (I think!).

Frankly, I've never actually used Elements to scan! Thanks for bringing this basic capability to my attention! For text documents/OCR I use ReadIRIS, only because it works better than nothing. But it usually crashes after more than one scan in a row!

Have you tried searching (Spotlight or any good Finder replacement app) for "TWAIN"?

I'm still on CS2, but when I connected my Epson scanner to my computer, I installed the Epson software and was able to use the scanner through either Photoshop or the utility program, (for me, it's called Epson Scan). The only way to adjust preference and scanning settings, I believe, is through the utility.

No reason not to install the software -- I'd bet there's more than enough space on your hard drive.

I just checked my Photoshop. When I go to scan (File>Import), there's no choices for TWAIN devices like there used to be. My choice is the specific model of Epson scanner.

On my G4 with Photoshop 7, I simply went to FILE/IMPORT, and then picked "Epson Perfection 2400" which would start the scan.
The other choices were Anti-aliased PICT, PDF Image, PICT Resource which had no use for me.

Now, I placed a downloaded TWAIN plug-in into Photoshop CS4 Plugins/ImportExport Folder.
But in Photoshop CS4, when I go to FILE/IMPORT, there is only - Antialiased PICT, PICT Resource, Video frames to Layers.

I've quit Photoshop and rebooted. Still no scanning plug-in shows up in FILE/IMPORT.

I'm wondering if it is this Rosetta mode that I can't turn on cause it is greyed out in "Get Info".

And I believe that if you download and install the appropriate scanner software from Epson, you'll get "Epson Perfection 2400" as a choice. That's how it was for me.

When I open my Photoshop and go to File>Import, my choices are Antialiased PICT, PICT Resource, and Epson Perfection 1660. The only way that last option could have appeared would have been if the scanner software installed it.

Note where my Brother TWAIN software is actually located. It is not an Adobe plug-in, it is from Brother. I would assume that the Epson software is the same (except from Epson, instead of Brother, of course! ). My point is, there is not even an alias of the Brother software in any Adobe/Photoshop/Elements folder. The Brother TWAIN software, and probably the Epson also, will be installed elsewhere on your hard drive. "yourHardDrive/Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/" sounds reasonable to me. Have you looked there? Note that this is not your user Library. The Restart may be required for PS and the OS to 'see' that there is new info in that System folder.

Yes, that's how it worked for me before.

I went through the whole process again of downloading Epson Scan v.2.77 and installing.
Nothing changed.

Then I went to Get Info and turned Rosetta on. It was not greyed out this time.
Rebooted.
Everything is now working as it should...
PHOTOSHOP - FILE/IMPORT/ and there it is... EPSON 2400!
