Something awful happened...

Yesterday after my last post (I was using Netscape), I was using Photoshop 7 and when I tryed to open a file, a bomb window appeared (I didn't pay much atention on what error was). I restarted with the button on the side, then, a happy Mac appeared, but right after the window with the OS showed, a window with a bomb appears (error 102) telling me that I have to restart with extentions off... I did that (with the shift key) but the same window showed (102) telling me the same thing (the startup window exhibit that the extentions were off). I ran the Norton disk, and "evrerything seems to be fine"... then I Start with the startup disk with the system and disable all the non Apple extentions by draggin them to the desktop... the same thing... I tryed several other and useless things, then I realize that with the startup disk I couldn't do much.
I remembered that the only odd thing I did before all this fuss is that I turn the virtual memory on (I have 320 physically) to 500 something...
Then I couldn't wait for "help" because the hour, and I had a lot to do, so I initialized the disk and reinstaled step by step from system 9 to 9.2.2, ten you can imagine all the trouble... but anyway, I finished the work, and I expent all day to put things on shape...

I come here to you, because, since I did all that, everything seem to be fine with the exeption that every time at start up and for a second, a totally white screen appears, and then a folder with a question mark, and a second later instead the question mark, a happy Mac face showed... then all the process I was very used to, the happy mac, etc, etc...
I don't know if this is a normal behavior or could be the beggining of another big crash.... and I really don't want to get use to this....

Check and see if you have 2 System folders on that HDD.

Hi Jorge,

Go to your Startup Disk control panel and make sure you have selected a start up drive.  That should take care of the question mark.

You were right. I highlighted specifically the folder (system folder) for the starup... and the question mark is gone

Now if it's not too much to ask. Do you know what kind of error is the 102 error?... I don't have the slightest idea what heppened to my computer

I'm guessing the original bomb wiped out the ability to recognize the system as 9.2.2 on restart, hence the complaint that there wasn't a system up to date with the ROM.

 Thank you all for your opinions on the matter (I didn't get the full idea of about half of the terms).
My concern is that (at least for me) this came from nowhere. It was from all the trash acumulated during years of use, causing a conflict?...

Hey Ballester, Tacit might be able to give you the real answer, but for me, these little "mysteries" are the things that keep the computer an "interesting" machine. . .It just seems as though sometimes things just come through the ether, to cause a problem.  Luckily, there are a bunch of good folk standing by to offer help in times of need!

Most likely, your system file was damaged during your crash. (In general, if you crash or see an error message, always read every single word. Want to know a secret? That's the #1 difference between most cmputer "experts" and computer "novices." Experts read what's on the screen; novices don't.)

The damage was repaired when you reinstalled the system.

You might want to consider something else: If you only have 320MB of RAM, setting virtual memory to 500 MB is too much; it may seriously affect your computer's performance. RAM is cheap; buy more RAM.

You are right, but never the less, I did that to test the performance of the machine, and of course... the last. I really can't complaint with 320MB, I can run Entourage, two browsers, Photoshop and maybe another program... and I saw now that with the virtual memory on (321MB) the Mac OS runs with less memory...
