Lag Problems
« on: June 08, 2003, 12:07:34 PM »
I recently bought a new motherboard and processor (Asus A7N8X w/Athlon xp 2100) to replace my old board (Asus K7M w/Athlon 800mhz). I have a cable modem, and before I got my new hardware I had no problems. Now my games lag so bad It's impossible to play. It's not system lag either. My video card is a Hercules 3d prophet2 ti 64mb. I've had it the whole time and it never had trouble running any of my games. I also have 512mb of pc3200 ddr ram & running Windows XP. What's the problem?

Well, it is mainly Mac users here, so getting a definite answer may be difficult. However, my suggestion would be a complete reinstall of Windows, your drivers, etc. The software may still be thinking you have your old hardware, and is trying to do incoorect things with it. I have many friends with PCs where I go to college, and they will all tell you that nothing is plug and play on the windows side. They too would reccomend reinstalling from scratch, making sure everything is as up to date as possible.

I used to have major lag problems on Windows 95/98 in my PC days...

Managed to reduce the problem radically by making a couple of changes in the system.ini file re: vcache and in how Windows manages the swapfile... but I don't know if any of this even applies to XP anymore.

I'd recommend you check our "links" section here:

there's an excellent WindowsBBS listed there... they'll have an XP forum... where someone will likely know more...  smile.gif
