Quicktime 6.0.2 won't play some .avi & .mpg clips

Occasionaly, I will get an .avi or a .mpeg clip that QuickTime 6 won't play. QT will play most of these types but with "bad" ones, I get a message that says, basically, QT is missing some components and/or plug insand they are not available from Apple.

I am running OS 10.2.4 with 1.5 GB RAM and enough hard disk space to choke an elephant (0.4 TB!). I use QT 6.0.2.

Also, I have never figured out how to open and play .wmv clips which I get from some Wintel-based frirnds a, colleagues and customers.

So anyone have any ideas as to how I can resolve these issues? Is there a mpeg-x format that QT 6 does not handle?

I'm not sure about mpeg files, so far QT has played what mpeg's I've created from a downloadable plug in.

For the avi files you could try VLC, you can locate it at Versiontracker.

wmv is proprietary to Windows Media Player.  It should work with the latest WMP, I viewed a few with it.

You can use VLC for most MPEG files too. VLC is a very powerful media player, that handles all sorts of codecs with ease. However, I have come across the occasional mpeg that even VLC couldn't handle.

Tom. FWIW. QT is up to 6.3

It may be worth it for you to buy the MPEG-2 Playback Component.
