Elements keyboard shortcut
« on: March 15, 2010, 09:57:27 PM »
I would have sworn I wrote about this a few weeks/days ago...no luck with the Search function...oh well, I need to have this info stored every conceivable place I can think of... wacko.gif

{for the patience-challenged, scroll down a bit to see the solution, thoughtfully presented in large text and a comforting deep blue color. you're most welcome}

Around the first week of this month, I realized the keyboard "shortcut" for the "Save for Web..." function was not working correctly. The keyboard command requires pressing the shift (left-hand pinky) + option (middle part of left-hand thumb) + command (upper part of left-hand thumb) + S (left-hand index finger). (Lefties are on their own! tongue.gif )

The problem was that, I had to do this key pressing two times before it would bring up the dialog. The first instance, usually, highlighted the "File" menu, but nothing else happened. Pressing them the second time absolutely always worked as it was supposed to. wallbash.gif

Started removing stuff from the Startup Items, moved the .plist file, removed some third-party Preference Panels, even uninstalled/reinstalled Elements/CS3/CS4/Bridge/anything that even looked like Adobe might have touched it, much less installed it. rolleyes.gif Absolutely no change except for a decrease in personal remaining hours of useful life.

Left message on Adobe's User-to-User forums. Replace/reset the plist. Reinstall Elements. "Uh Oh! You uninstalled Elements manually!" nono.gif "Didn't you read the Read Me that says to use the Uninstaller on the Instal disk?" Uhmn...what Read Me? I don't need no stinkin' Read Me! rant.gif This is a Mac! We don't need manuals, anyway! But I did take a look, and, sure enough, it says the Installer has an Uninstall function. clap.gif

Well, you sure can't believe every thing you read... There simply is NOT any uninstall function on the Installer. There IS an alias on ones HD labeled "Uninstall.app" however. It is an alias without so much as a Get Info window. There is no indication that it actually points to anything. That's why I deleted it, long ago! dntknw.gif What good is a broken alias?

That stupid, non-standard alias, does, however work, even without the Install disk mounted (which is where I thought it might be pointing...). And it does make uninstalling much easier. It had absolutely no effect on my problem, but hey, I learned something. blush-anim-cl.gif

OK, ok, long story short: The cause of this problem is the selection of the US Extended input source. eek2.gif

I don't know why, either, but I verified it by installing Elements on Judy's MBP. The Save for web... function worked perfectly on her machine, of course. I changed to the US Extended keyboard and the function immediately quit working. Changed back to the Plain Jane US keyboard and it worked, again. No restart, not even a need to Quit Elements. Just plain magic!

Also works on my Imac now that I switched back to Plain Jane US keyboard (Southern Division). So much for Adobe "Tech" support in India..."Rest your preferences on start up. Now see if crtl + alt + shift + S works... Uhmn, probably on a Windows boxen...did you not read the part about this being OS X Snow Leopard on a Mac? Nevermind...
