Web Mail vs. Mac Mail, or both?

When my mail went south on my old Mac, I switched to the new one, and have all my mail coming into Mac Mail.
Except for my jcarter(at)capecod.net one.
This one I have to use the Earthlink Web Mail system. Its quite clunky, not anywhere as good as the Gmail, but I would LOVE to get my jcarter(at)capecod.net mail using Mac Mail.
But would like also to be able to use the Earthlink webmail for this address, if we travel, or should I forget trying to double up on that, and just use the Gmail for traveling.
Im assuming that I could have all the mail that comes into the Mac Mail forwarded to the Gmail for a week or month or whatever?

Im not good at messing around with the mail system, just hope that I could use both E-link WebMail and Mac Mail, for that address? Both.
I would have to remember to have it removed from server too?

You can use both. If you're traveling, your Macs at home will likely be shut off and not downloading your new mail, so you'll see everything coming in via the web mail. I ALWAYS have Mail set to leave mail on the server for a week (even when not traveling) - it's saved my bacon a few times when I've deleted something by mistake that I actually needed. When you get home, and turn on your Mac at home again, it will download everything into Mail.

You can do this with pretty much any mail system BTW. I'm assuming that you're using POP. Of course, with IMAP, everything stays on the server anyway, so you can access all of it via the web from anywhere. If you travel a lot or access mail from several different computers, it may make more sense to use IMAP. However, I don't see the IMAP settings for Earthlink and let's not confuse the issue for now.

(I think once you've entered the info above in the Accounts section of Mail's preferences, all you will need to do is check the "use only this server" and then in the Advanced section, click on Authentication - Password.

Thank you! Mail is a bit confusing to me, as it always worked so great without any effort until this glitch happened.

Im using POP, and never have thought of IMAP as I use just these Macs at home.

And also thank you for the settings for my Earthlink account.

Its late and we are tired from a nice and long day, so I am going to look at everything tomorrow when the old brain is fresh, and go thru it step by step, as I really need that original email address, as it was my first and all my family uses it.
I'm just leaving this page open so it will be the first thing I will work on tomorrow. Lessons can wait,,,,,,

Hi Paddy,
I just got around to setting it up today, its soooo nice compared to the webmail from Earthlink.
I kept getting cialis and viagra crap from them, and there is no way to filter it out using the words on their webmail system. So with the Mac Mail filters, Im sure I wont see any more of that stuff, nor the worse words which are automatically filtered out by Mac Mail I think.
Ive never seen the really yukky spam come thru on any of my Mac Mail accounts ever, so they must do it before it ever gets to us, thank goodness.
Now all I will use the Earthlink webmail for is traveling, I remembered to set it to remove server in 5 days like you said.
Actually I do like the Gmail system, can use that for traveling if needed. That has great filters too.
