Safari.
« on: June 10, 2003, 11:45:27 AM »
.....already installed on X.2.5+ and have had success.

I thought I had read the thread a bit, but didn't have much time to scan for it and was looking for a relatively quick answer, if one exists.

I'm considering installing Public beta 2 on X.2.5.

Any thoughts, warnings, etc?

Thanks.

Not like some betas that will destroy everything.

It's just a Beta as in not fully done. smile.gif

Like most others, I do not install betas! I would just as soon install a virus as I would a beta. I would prefer Bernie reformat my HD than install a beta. I haven't installed a beta for at least 8 years.

Now that I have said that, after reading so many reports of how wonderful the Safari Beta 2 v74 actually is (and having a carbon copy of my OS X just in case), I installed Safari. blush-anim-cl.gif

Never a bit of problem. Oh I had the normal questions one would have with any new browser, but in sum, I find this product better than the final release most other browsers. I have no reluctance in recommending it.

There are still a few sites the pose problems for Safari, so it is best (IMNHO) to keep your present browser around a bit longer should you need it. Aside from that, goferit. tongue.gif

It loads so much faster than IE.

The only problem I've had with Safari is that their last version let you have an auto-fill function & I implemented it right away as I missed using one.

Alas, it's very "in-your-face" & over wrote my dotMac log-in over & over. I could not access my account at all. In my case, the auto-fill overwhelmed everything.
After a lot of trouble-shooting & whining, I was lucky enought to get just the right person in the dotMac group who knew what was happening.
We disabled the auto-fill function & I have had zero trouble since.

I do keep IE on hand but seldom use it anymore.

Flash, I have no idea where you got v.80 - the current one on Apple's web site is v.74 (May 15) and it very clearly says "Safari 1.0 Beta 2".

I may be the only one in the universe who had this problem: After loading Safari, I could not get the preference panel to work. Everything on the panel (tabs, buttons, etc) was frozen so I could not set preferences. No one else here or other places had this problem so I was out of luck. I finally uninstalled it and stayed with IE. I will try it again when it goes final. Hoiwever, my friend, RHPConsult raves about Mozilla and I will try that.

We certainly have a surfeit of browser riches for the Mac. clap.gif

Re Safari v80, MFI comments on 10 June:

"There is a purportedly leaked Safari beta making its rounds on underground file sharing networks and some Web sites. nono.gif

The new version comes complete with an installer, and apparently once you've installed it you can no longer use Safari v74 (the last authorized release) or earlier. This is consistent with previous Apple iApp releases, such as iTunes.

Problems arise when users find lost functionality or bugs with the unauthorized release, and are then unable to downgrade. One MacFixIt reader reports losing all of bookmarks while using this "update", and not being able to use the official release (v74) afterwards.

Bottom line: Steer clear of this unauthorized "v80" copy until Apple makes an official release.

Uninstall Process: The following process should work for reverting to Safari v74 if you installed the unauthorized v80 release:

1. Login as the root user

2. Trash Safari and the WebKit.framework (use the Find function to locate it)

3. Copy the Foundation.framework (again, use the Find function) from another Mac.

4. Re-apply the Mac OS X 10.2.6 combo update.

5. Reboot, reset your preferences and reinstall Safari 74"

I think I'll wait for the official release. whistling.gif
