BEWARE of the Apple security update 6-9-2003
« on: June 11, 2003, 08:26:34 PM »
I installed the security update 6-9-2003 this morning and it disabled my log-in button.

The one that you click on after putting in your password. I see others are having the same trouble at MFI.

It won't accept my password if I use the button. The workaround is to just hit the Return key after putting in your password.   wacko.gif

I am not certain if his particular "gotcha" got me as I use the automatically log in feature from the System Preferences/Accounts pane, but for sure this is a mess. MFI and other forums are also filled with comments such as yours.

I even got a call this morning from a "stricken" colleague who was unaware of the Return tip, and was thus unable to check with TS or Apple because he could not access/log in to his computer.

I wonder how long it will take Apple to withdraw this update and replace it with a bug-free fix.  upset.gif In the mean time, they have recently posted this KB article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86377

There have been many reported problems with this update starting from  it's initial release. I've been very busy lately and so I haven't had a chance to update, I had a day off yesterday and planned to do some of that, but luckily the word was out and I didn't.

This update is of no consequence since the services it updates are not used by the average home user.

For Harv. Some links to explain what this security update is all about:

What is LDAP?

What is BIND?

What is Kerberos?

A lighter look at Kerberos a good read

Karl, Thanks for the links. Most I still do not understand, but I am beginning to get the picture, even if it is a bit (a big bit) muddied.

What I really really wanted was the Quicktime 6.3 update. The security update box was checked
in the update panel but i messed up and didn't uncheck it and walked away from the computer to do some work while the download was going on.

I wish Apple would fix that too. tell you what can be updated but not automatically check those boxs by default.

It's not the first time i've downloaded something i don't need.

i have to be more careful. unsure.gif

I have not noticed that yet, as i always use the "return" key to enter.
I will try it tomorrow though.

As for the rest, no problems here smile.gif

Apple just posted v2.0 of the Security Update. Apparently this fixes the log-in problem and is available via software update.
