NPR question repeated!
« on: June 30, 2010, 12:24:18 AM »
Tonight at around midnight I wrote the following:

QUOTE
"Please" delete this comment and any other that misspelt querulous (If I were speaking aloud to myself I'd try to do in in the rough and quirelous) Of course the only source I have ever traced for a sound recording of Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) is from an Edison recording which you can find on Youtube and in other places. This rough and "querulous" voice would be the one I would use. My topic would be the NPR story I heard today about a woman who has lost a child from having a tree limb dropped on it. I would tell her, and myself, not to think ill of herself (myself), or my Maker, or of whatever exists in the absence of a maker, or the governments of the State, Counties, or city of NYC. Or even the Parks Department of New York City (whatever it may be called). If a person, through action or inaction, may seem to be guilty in some way of this falling limb then you may seek justice but I think in my age of reason, that you might be less than satisfied by the outcome of any legal proceding, because the end is never equal to the means used to obtain it! Love of child is the only thing left in the end and it will be left no matter who is left to do the remembering. Good luck to the 21 year old someones of this world!

I'm John Davies and I use the alias "gunug" because of reasons dear to my past memories!  If someone, being an auditor or a representative of the founders of this enterprise, wishes this not to be here then please make it go away in whatever mysterious manner such things happen!   thanx.gif

I admit to misspelling querolous and maybe misusing the word misspelt; all other mistakes are probably in logic or the reason of discourse (the discourse of reason) If comments are held please leave them in the place below for such things!

The link where this came from:

This is the picture I have in my mind of Mark Twain when I summon forth his voice into my own mind:

Copyright "James Beckwith, 1890"
I believe this to be in the public domain following the custom of 70 years past the date of death as is held in every country I know of; I should also apologize for assuming the letters under the signature on the painting say "Ontario" when clearly they say nothing of the sort!

I meant to do a little more explaining; this was a response to an NPR story in which a 20 year old woman pretends to hear the sage advice her 40 year old self would have to share.  I tried to put the story up about four times and I wasn't sure it was going to post the final time.

Uh...OK...whatever you say... smile.gif good to 'hear' you're fine...now go sip some warm milk and rty to relax a few hours...everything will be fine, OK? tease.gif

I looked at the story and couldn't see the significance of starting a blog basically saying "if I'd only known then what I know now." OTOH, most blogs don't have an over-abundance of "significance" for anyone but the "author." rolleyes.gif "'The fact that you have access to the interwebs and a computer doesn't mean you have anything worth says anymore than having a typewriter did in 1950', he wrote via his computer keyboard." rofl.gif

I was speaking about the futility of them suing anyone; not that it wouldn't be financially beneficial, just that it can't bring the child back.  To all; I probably should take this down because it's too confusing. . .Krissel, anyone else, if you want it down just email me and do it.  This may have been more "self-serving" than informational and information, not anything else, seems to be important here.  Don't seal it; take it down if it's unnecessary.  I appreciate everyone's patience with Gunug the village idiot! Thinking.gif

I guess the point of this was lost but it was just a reposting of something I tried several times to put up on a NPR "comment" page.  The original article was an attempt by a 20 year old woman to give herself advice as if she were her 40 year old future self!  I'm doing the same thing, as directed, from a 54 year old man to his 20 something avatar!  Danger here and confusion!  oops.gif

Probably the most confusing part is that I "seem" to have had my comment taken down (or never really posted) and it is reacting to my login attempts as if I never had been there before. whistling.gif Maybe they took it down at my request when I wrote: ("Please" delete this comment and any other that misspelt querulous.") I wonder if "Click and Clack" or "Garrison Keillor" ever have this sort of problem?

gunug, if you want this thread gone, then we can make it go away; but it's served as an interesting discussion, so it's not useless. I admit I didn't understand at first, but now that I know that this was your advice to your younger self, it makes more sense to me.

I guess what I'd tell my younger self is: getting old ain't for wimps.

And you are NOT an idiot. I find your comments quite informative and interesting.

John, I figured you were speaking in a philosophical attempt to express frustration at the all too common reaction to such incidents...suing. Things happen.  We can't always assign blame or responsibility to every occurrence, sometimes you just have to accept it as a part of life.

A week or so ago I had an "incident" at the Y that resulted in my being rather bruised and bloodied. The people in the building were all upset and wanted to call an ambulance. I refused and they helped me attend to my injuries but still they had to fill out an "incident" report to cover themselves. I understood that they were concerned not just about my personal well-being but were also trying to protect themselves should I want to sue.

But in my opinion there was no negligence on their part so I didn't want to make a fuss. A few days of rest, many ice packs and lots of makeup and I'm OK. smile.gif

Now this can't compare to someone losing their life but still, things happen.

I've had a recent run-in with the ground and after trying, and failing, to jump over a mud flat and onto a curb, I hit the ground face first and then wrecked my eyeglasses, nose, and shoulder.  This happened just off of the grounds of a Raytown School District building and I had people checking me out almost before I managed to stand up.  I realized that the fault was mine and readily signed a waver that the school nurse gave me.  I knew that I was acting like I was 20 years old and not the 54 years old that I am.  The extra element of the loss of a child is probably something I should take into account but I still feel that suing someone over something that is not their fault is not fair and only fills the wallet and not the vacancy in your heart!   sad.gif

Having spent a bazillion hours in Central Park over the years, I was really sad to hear about this accident (and surprised it hadn't happened sooner). Central Park is an incredibly beautiful space -- even more so when you remember it's in the middle of a huge concrete city. But New York is a very litigious place; someone's always suing about something.

While this accident is horrible, there are things that just can't be controlled. This reminds me of several years ago, when someone sued after being hit by a Macy's Parade balloon that went out of control because of the wind. I've been to the Thanksgiving Parade; even on a good day (few and far between in November), those balloons have minds of their own. I've seen the balloons bouncing off high-rises along the parade route. Maybe they need to stop this tradition.

The balloons or the high-rises? rofl.gif

Maybe just remove the phrase "personal responsibility" from the language?

he legal profession is not an enjoyable topic around here...as the Executor of an aunt's estate, I'm considering executing some of them... eek2.gif scram.gif

As I worry about how to pay whom, I get a bill every month from the attorney reminding me of the "professional services rendered" (6.40 hours for $728, not including mailing and copying costs). I should just be happy I'm not paying for the "high-priced spread" that owns the firm. rolleyes.gif And, most of the Certified mailings are over...
