Iphone won't mount

I recently updated my 3G iPhone to 4.0 and wrote about the problems here. They subsided after a second update session. However, the iPhone no longer mounts on my iMac 10.5.8. It doesn't even show up in the disk utility and does not charge. It charges fine through a wall plug so it's not an immediate concern but something's gotta give.
Ok i just got around it by making sure the phone was on and restarting. Now it's updating so maybe it will fix something. If i have to restart every time it would not be too much of a hassle since i seldom plug into the computer.

Hope the restart fixed it. Had to do a couple of those a few weeks ago on my 3G, no trouble since then. Probably not a bad idea to do a re-start on the thing every month, anyway.
Also check the cable you are using when connecting to the computer. Is it the same one when using the wall charger?
Finally, check the connection on the computer. If you have more than one USB connector, try each one. You should also try using another device in those connections, as well. Bet you have a thumb drive laying around...if not, get one, they're always handy and are getting dirt cheap! Even if it's just to check those connections!

My dirt cheap thumb drive cost me $40 but it is 16 gigs. Takes a while for that to show up as well.

Show up where?
Just for grins, how many icons are on your Desktop? Seriously.

Try putting every one of those "mucho many" icons on your Desktop into a single folder. Restart. It should start up faster. The "Desktop" is simply a 'window.' Every window has a 'memory' file of the location of everything in it. Most apps don't allow too many movable 'things' in their windows, things are hard coded in a specific place. Not so with a Finder window. It must keep up with the location of every single item on the window and put the things back in that location on startup. But it also has to 'repaint' that window every time part of it is uncovered when you close some other window. That's another reason for it to keep track of 'stuff.' If you, indeed, have "mucho many" icons on your Desktop, it is causing not only the file of their locations to be large, it takes time for the OS/cpu to read that file and draw every one of those icons in the exact place you left them (and make changes to that file if you move any icon even one pixel!).
Seriously, move as many of those icons into groups of folders and put those folders into other groups, etc. until you can have as few icons on the Desktop as possible. It's hard to keep a real desktop clutter free, but there's no excuse for having a cluttered virtual desktop. Finding stuff by looking for an icon is not ideal, anyway, but using the Finder for what it is best at will make things much faster, also. Let the Finder do what it is meant to do and keep the Desktop for viewing some of the beautiful images that you may have around.
Now, if I could only convince my wife to follow my advice...

Complied.
Looks better but does not help the no-show iPhone problem.

Wasn't attempting to solve the iPhone problem, just the "[The thumbdrive] Takes a while for that to show up..." comment.
As for the iPhone:
1. Have you tried re-booting it? If not, try that.
2. Are you connecting it directly to the Mac's USB port? If not, try one.
3. Do you have another USB port? If so, try it.
4. Do you have another cable? My cat pretty well destroyed mine!

What do you mean by that? Reboot the iPhone? I don't know what that is. I do reboot the iMac and nothing happens.

Well rebooting the iphone did help, if that's what holdiing the two buttons on the iPhone until it restarts means. After two of those and two iMac reboots, it's back again.
Seems to be a common problem. Apple finally tells you to reinstall iTunes and do some command line things but the old reliable "reboot" did the trick (anyone here watch the IT Crowd, hilarious Brit TV comedy series about two tech guys who tell people to try turning their computers on and off again all day but figure even that is too much work).
Anyway, thanks!

Iphone now in restore mode. Guess I'll lose my photos. Have some good ones of my cats being intimidated by a chipmunk (through a glass patio door, of course).
Got an update request on the computer, then it said the phone would not update due to unknown error, then said to restore. I think my wife is right when she says to never update.

"Update" what?
1. iPhone
2. the Mac
3. iTunes
I "Sync" my iPhone every couple of weeks, manually. Always update the data on the phone with what's in my Contacts, Calendar, etc. on the iMac.
I update apps when I notice there are some.
I re-boot the iPhone about once every two months.
I
never
update anything without having a backup of it. Even an app. It's just too easy to make a zip file of something before hitting the "Update" button. Then, if the update messes something up, I just delete the new one and unzip the old one. Of course, it's best to check for a corrupt pref file before deleting anything...

Itunes wanted to put latest software on iPhone. But it stopped, saying there was an unknown error. With help of Apple's toubleshooting site, i got it to restore the iPhone, going back to original and then add my apps and such. Only thing it didnt restore was my music. That's ok though as it's all on the computer and i can add it as needed.
It also turns out the usb hub is somewhat of a problem, at least with the iphone. I need a better one.
