Humor in Movies (Summer Fun Addition)!

I don't know how many of you "youngsters" of all ages have ever seen a movie from 1966 called the "Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming."  It was a Norman Jewison produced film that had a big and funny cast but Carl Reiner is at his best in it. But I'm thinking of renting or buying that movie for a scene (among others) in it where Theodore Bikel, as the captain of the russian submarine that had run aground, was waiting in the conning tower for the return of his men and he sits there and drums his fingers just like XABD's cat does in the icon gif he's using as an Avatar!  Well, I think so anyway! Thinking.gif

At around Minute 8:00 or so of this video you see a real good image of Theodore Bikil as the Submarine Captain, standing in the cockpit. I didn't see the shot of him drumming his fingers but it is possibly in there or maybe we should all rent the movie:

Given the climate of "peaceful coexistence" between Russian and the united states maybe we shouldn't ask the cat for it's papers after all!  biggrin.gif

Anyone else have a funny scene from an old "summer" movie then tell us about what you liked!

I do remember that movie.  It was shown at my high school for free one summer in the late 60's.  It also appeared not too long ago on late night TV.

Anyway, I don't remember the finger drumming scene...

As to my recollections of a funny scene... well, I'm Thinking.gif

Movies like "T.R.A.C.-T.R.A.C."  are farces, they're meant to be funny.  I think it's funny because they "usually" don't push the point; they try to keep human perspective.  I think a lot of the funniest things aren't in comedy movies at all.  Things are funny and human and strike us as funny! smile.gif

A nice companion piece to "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" might be "Dr. Strangelove." George C. Scott alone is worth the price of admission, but I find myself at least chuckling all the way through -- and partly because I'm finding humor in such a dark subject.

dboh - I loved the bit in Strangelove where Slim Pickens rides the bomb into Russia yelling "yahoo" or whatever it was!  There is dark humor and humor that would be dark except for the way it was handled; I kind of think a case in point might be where the U.S. Airforce flies in formation over the fleet of small boats "escorting" the Russian submarine at the end of the movie.  I think the humanity of the whole movie comes out in force right then!

What I was "really" after I can't think of an example of: a general, not comic, motion picture where humor wins out!  I guess the "summer" part of it isn't really pertinent just so we watch it in the summer!

Gunug,

Dr. Strangelove is one of my all-time favorite movies.

I have it on DVD and play it at least 2 times per year.

It is loadedb with satire and humor.

Do you mean "ha ha" humor or the wry, sardonic kind? For instance, I think Clockwork Orange is far from funny, but Kubrick does manage to make a mockery of both law-and-order types and nanny-staters. All of the toadying after Alex's "rescue" was pretty humorous. (And we thought smarmy politicians were an American exclusive!)

Here's a collection of movies where -- for us -- "humor wins out":
  • Arsenic and Old Lace
  • Cat Ballou
  • Foul Play
  • Miss Congeniality
  • My Cousin Vinny
  • Oscar
  • Shaun the Sheep: "Off the Baa!", "A Wooly Good Time" & "Little Sheep of Horrors"
  • Stardust
  • Wallace & Gromit: "A Close Shave," "A Grand Day Out" and "The Wrong Trousers"
  • What's Up, Doc?

However the all time best happy movie for summer, fall, winter or spring:
Princess Bride

You're definitely right about Arsenic and Old Lace and Cat Ballou. They're in a class by themselves. Especially "heavy" Lee Marvin! And while he may not have been the dramatic equivalent of Lee Marvin, watching Cary Grant scramble around to cover for his aunts is priceless. Plus an honorable mention to Boris Karloff!

I'm going to have to get both of these movies from my library. It'll be a great way to ward off the heat!

If you want humor, you can almost always bet on anything from Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, but also the non-movie shtick, "The 2000 Year Old Man" with Carl Reiner as the straight man). Airplane (one) comes close, lots of hidden humor just behind the slap stick. But Men in Black has a lot of "I missed that the first time I saw it!" There are not many serious actors that can pull off a humorous part, IMHO. If they know what they're doing, it's easy and an art. If they don't know how to be funny, they'll just die with all the re-takes! wink.gif

But "humor" is a very subjective thing. We each have our own definitions and "funny bone(s)." "I may not be able to define it, but I know it when I see [or hear] it."

I just rewatched The Gods Must Be Crazy which was a documentary that was released in 1980.  I originally watched it in a movie theatre and found myself more attracted to the Bushman's clicking language.  This time I really appreciated the plot and the humor; it's a really gentle and human movie:

The Wiki page probably explains the movie better than I could: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gods_Must_Be_Crazy

I'd almost forgotten this thread!

I have recently concluded that what I'm looking for most often in an entertaining movie is something like a Cary Grant like sensibility. . .remember Charade and the funny dialog in the middle of a murder mystery.  Marvelous!  This is probably some better hidden character trait that I shouldn't reveal! whistling.gif
