Magic Trackpad and Apple store
« on: October 05, 2010, 06:01:00 PM »
Apple opened its retail store in Spokane WA last week  clap.gif   Now instead of 300 miles it is only 30 to all of the genius(s) one could ask for plus all of the toys to play with plus rolleyes.gif  it is a pretty big store. I got out of there with only a "Magic Track Pad" for the Mini in the shopping bag and after downloading the rite software it works like gangbusters,  I love it.

On the other hand "She" has started the political process (read lobbying) for an iPad. So best guess is it wont be long before one shows up around here. Groaner.gif   I keep telling her that a nice 27 inch iMac would make more sense, but what do I know???? wacko.gif

Get her the iPad as well as this tee shirt.    I speak from experience as an old married man.   toothgrin.gif

Good thing TS is one of the places she visits or I am afraid that with all of ya'll(s) "support" we would be  on our way to the new store first thing this morning. eek2.gif   There is no doubt in my mind that there is one in the future assure.gif .  The only question is when. I keep asking her WHY?? blink.gif   Traveling with her Ipod Touch provides  MOST of what she would get with an iPad and she would save the cost and  convenience    of having to obtain a bigger purse, computer bag or what ever. doh.gif I know, I know.

Left brain vs Right brain. Maybe I will just go ahead and order the tee shirt. Thinking.gif

HAven't yet been able to order my new iMac. But I went by the Apple Store to see if the Track Pad might be worth trying. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. First, it's not stuck in the front middle of the keyboard as it would be on a laptop. Second, it's much larger than what comes on a laptop. That makes it much better for my size 12 hand! There is a definite clicking movement (too noisy to be able to actually hear anything while in the Store). So, when I get to my order-taker, I'm asking for the Track Pad instead of the Magic Mouse or even the wired mouse!

BTW, Lion makes re-sizing windows much easier, just as I'd read, any side can be 'grabbed' (the cursor changes when over any edge). Nor did I sense any un-natural scrolling behavior; one finger moves the mouse, naturally, and two fingers moves the viewport if there is anything not already visible in the window. So, moving the cursor is just like it is now; move a finger away from you and the cursor moves up the screen and vice versa. Moving the viewport uses two fingers and is completely natural in the sense that one would drag what's visible down to see more of what might be at the top or up to see more of the bottom. It's a perfect analogy of he window showing a piece of what the app has to display; it's a viewport that is often smaller than what can be seen. dntknw.gif

Of course, the scroll bars can still be used by moving the cursor over to the right or bottom edge of the window, but I suspect that will become a little used method since the two-finger method will negate placing the cursor in a rather narrow, even if long, target area. Plus, the scroll bar method not only requires moving the cursor but then another click to actually move the viewport. And, if one needs to move diagonally, the two-finger method wins handsfingertips down! clap.gif Groaner.gif If you've ever used the 'hand grabber' cursor/tool in PS, yo'll understand immediately...

size 12 fingers shouldn't be problem, IMHO if there are any issues it just might be the "lazy finger syndrome"

The magic trackpad is wonderful. clap.gif   It takes a while to "adjust" .  You must be able to count to 4. harhar.gif   1 finger cursor movement. 2 finger scrolling, magnifying etc , 3 finger  application identification etc. and I don't remember what 4 does. Groaner.gif   If you have "lazy" fingers and happen to inadvertently  touch it with a 3rd or 4th finger while doing a 2 finger job all kinds of weird things happen. huh.gif  That said my "mouse" is retired. bump.gif

Gonna wait a bit for Lion tho.

Gud luck re the new Mac cheer.gif

I've used some of the "finger dancing" on my iPhone for a couple of years now. I think that may have helped me work with the Track Pad. I was just fearing that it would have been like the pads on a laptop; small and inconveniently located, at least for those who are accustomed to having a mouse on one side of the keyboard or the other, smile.gif

I got another email from my buyer who said, "I wanted to do this today but it didn't happen." He's our younger son (soon to be 37!!!) who works for a well known computer company who shall remain nameless. Because of his employment, he gets a 'Friends and Family" discount. I'm hoping I still fit into one or the other of those groups! laughhard.gif The most important thing is the "news" he provides: "Things are better than ever these days. They're letting me do some awesome things - Wish I could say more, you know how it is smile.gif" Sometimes parents wonder (and pray an awful lot!) about their 'kids'... In our case, both 'boys' (how did they get so old?! Their mother must have married young!!! eek2.gif ) are fine, productive men! clap.gif
