iPod Touch battery is flat. Or is it?
« on: November 03, 2010, 01:57:47 AM »
Following on from this thread since this seems to be a different problem from the one that started that thread:

My iPod Touch seems to have a dying battery. Fully charged Saturday, showed full charge yesterday when switched off and now completely flat.
Is there any way of checking battery condition when it's plugged in to the iMac? I can't find one.

In reply to my own post..... found an item here about problems with gen 2 and 3 iPod Touches after installing the latest OS. Seems if you leave wi-fi on it keeps the connection even after the device is switched off, resulting in a drained battery.
I'll try switching off iPod's wi-fi when not in use and see if that makes a difference.

OK - Last night, disconnected iPod after it had been plugged in to the iMac most of the day, without it connecting to iTunes or showing any signs of the battery charging up. No syncing, nothing. Press lower button and screen came alive long enough to show battery icon with extremely narrow red power stripe. Eventually it did let me get to the launch screen but was still not showing as connected to the iMac, though it must have been drawing power through the USB lead. Had tried various permutations during the day of plugging and unplugging from iMac and restarting the iMac.

This morning, I first plugged the iPod Touch into the Mac (same USB socket as yesterday) and then started the Mac. First thing to happen was the white apple icon on the screen. Then it came up with the battery icon showing it fully charged! iTunes then launched and it went through the sync procedure.

FYI: iPod Touch is Model MB528BT, 2G 8GB; OS v 4.1; capacity 6.8GB, available 3.2GB. iMac is running iTunes 9.2.1.

Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on? Please.....?

macfixit some info on this link re dying batterries. It seems as if it is another Apple glitch, but some tips you may want to try first. Good luck, if all else fails, a trip to the Apple Store would be well justified whistling.gif

Just posted to the other thread.  Neil, did you read through that Apple thread?  Seems as though the new iOS 4.x has caused all kinds of battery problems.

I can't begin to list all the potential suggestions from that thread including reverting to iOS 3, backing up then resetting to new iPod and restoring from the backup, turning off all app connections (or removing them) that call on the Game Center or push notification, manually turning off the WiFi, not putting the iPod to sleep but actually turning it off, using Airplane mode, etc.

You really need to read through the last 10 pages to glean some of the things that have helped others. The Apple people have not let info on how to downgrade be posted. I went to Google and only typed "downgrade" and immediately the suggestions were for downgrading the iOS so it's a popular item.

http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en#sclient=...304850557947867

Of course, if you don't have any recurring difficulties, then you won't need to do anything.  Or maybe some of the user suggestions will help.

In any rate, I'm not going to upgrade my iPod Touch!  no2.gif

OK, Pauline posted while I was typing. thanx.gif That page has a summary of some of the suggestions but there are more in the thread.

Thanks Pauline – that link adds more info than I had from the first one! I've now switched off most of the things mentioned, (Game Center - not interested; Bluetooth - didn't even know it had it!; etc, etc) so we'll see how it goes.

Just spotted Kris's post as I previewed this one; thanks very much thumbup.gif

And now my hearing-aid battery's gone flat. At least I can install a new one in that without a lot of hassle  rolleyes.gif

Update - Just switched on  the Touch which I recharged on Nov 3 and it's still fully charged, though I had to do a two-button reset to unfreeze the On slider. Let's hope that's just coincidence...

To recap - switched off wi-fi and Bluetooth and put it into Airplane mode as well. Will now just switch on wi-fi when it's needed. Like when I use Remote to connect Airport Express  to iTunes.

A belated update to this thread:

Airplane mode does seem to be the answer for older iPod Touches. If I remember to set to that, I have no problems and can switch it on days later. If I forget, the battery goes dead (as in DEAD!!!!!) again.

So that seems to confirm it as the answer; in my case, at any rate. But it's a bit of a nuisance having to go to settings every time I switch on.....  rolleyes.gif
