Power Tower Pro 250 dual processor
« on: June 19, 2003, 09:09:00 AM »
Hi,
I have an old Power Computing Tower Pro 250 that I like to play with. I noticed somewhere that this unit can be upgraded to a dual processor. A Pro 250 dual processor model was made by the company.

I was just wondering what I would need to do this ?
Is it a Dual Processor daughtercard I need ? If so, I'm guessing it is not a cheap item unless I can find a used one on Epay or somewhere.
Thanks for any input,
Krow

Krow, I've never seen a dual upgrade card for the Power Tower Pro made by Power Computing - you can get Sonnet G3 & G4 single processor cards (up to 800MHz) at OWC

Power Computing did make a dual processor Power Tower Pro:

I've never even seen one on eBay - not sure how many of them they actually sold, considering that they cost a whopping $6,500!

Daystar/XLR8 also have upgrade cards, and theoretically you could add a dual processor upgrade to their carrier cards, but I don't see any for the Power Tower era clones:

The Sonnet cards look like a better deal to me. XLR8, now that it has been bought out by Daystar (or whatever happened - XLR8 itself, as an independent company, no longer exists) does not seem to have developed anything new since last year. I have no idea what customer support (and all those other good things) are like with Daystar.

Though XLR8 did make dual upgrade cards, I can't find any at the retailers that used to carry their products, and Daystar don't actually list them for sale. Nothing on eBay right now either, except the single processor cards.

Thanks Paddy for the info.
The more I think about the statement "upgradeable to a dual processor" must have meant it was an upgradable option when ordered new.
I doubt I will spend much money on it, I just like to tinker with it and thought about buying a used one from ebay for parts if I could find one cheap.
Oh Well........another project for another day.
