Really old sites, how to find them again
« on: January 17, 2011, 12:16:09 PM »
Long ago on Earthlink and Comcast, actually adelphia.net, I had 3 sites. You got some free space, so I put up some pages.
I have lost the URLs for all of them, new computers, no old bookmarks.

But I do remember that right after the .net part, there is a ~ and 'users' than a forward slash, and then your name.
Sadly nothing comes up on either one.
Anybody remember that old stuff?
Thanks,
Jane

If you are still a paying customer to these three companies, they should be able to help. Otherwise, why would they be giving you space on their servers? dntknw.gif

I got to the Earthlink one really easy, the URL started with home. then my name with the tilde.  Super pictures of our grandkids when they were babies!

But for Comcast I cant get to it, it started out with Adelphia, and I guess I am going to have to contact their website support people.
I had another one like Trellix, but it had a different name.  It was one that people used a lot about 12 years ago, but the name just eludes my old brain.

According to Comcast's web site, their users' web pages are either:

http://home.comcast.net/~USERNAME
http://username.home.comcast.net

The pages you put up are still there Jane - use the first variation, with your first and last name as the user name. wink.gif

Thank you!!!
No matter how I plugged in that one, and I guess I did have it correct, I got a 404. The browser changed it before it would work. So I took your advice and copied it into the browser and up it came.  Heaven knows why it had to be that way, but you fixed that one for me.
It was some really old html lessons of mine.

The one Im really after is not Trellix, not bravenet, but another old one that I just cannot remember. Everybody used it about 10 years ago, I can almost think of it, its in my old brain somewhere,,,,,,,,
It was quite a popular way of families putting up pages before anybody had a clue of how to use HTML.

The reason I need that one, is its of a construction of a chimney that my brother needs the photos from.
Thanks again,
Jane

Why not search for terms you know are in the site and especially any links with you addy or even your name. dntknw.gif That doesn't guarantee it will show up on the first (or 40th page), of course... And I suppose you don't have any of the html files? Nice use of remarks is to store info like the sites the files are server from... Thinking.gif

Have nothing, this was about 11 years ago, and none of the old Macs are here.
If I could remember the name, it was not Trellix but something very close, I would be able to plug in my name.
Knowing me, it will come to me in the middle of the night within a couple of weeks.
Or I could email the stone mason who did the work, as he saved the pictures, I think,,,,,

Tripod? It still exists though there is nothing for either jcarter or janecarter - did you use that in the name? Geocities shut down a year ago. Angelfire still exists.

Even if you can remember the name, it's quite possible that the free site is long gone. Might be easier to just email the stone mason. wink.gif

Tripod!!! Thats it, thank you, Now I have to remember my user name.
Jane

I knew it was something about our chimney!   My brother will be thrilled that Ive recovered these pictures.
And I will contact the stone mason, as he has a new computer and had lost the pages too.
I had a dream about a black lab last night, and when I made these old pages, we had a neighbour with a black lab puppy with 3 legs and she named him "Tripod".

The info was on my really old external hard drive, and I had forgotten that I had saved that stuff.

Thats neat, can find our old stuff that way also.
I have written it all down in my little notebook as well.

Heres another really old one, a silly one, that I had not written down, but I did it over anyway.
