OpenOffice is now LibreOffice
« on: January 25, 2011, 06:13:24 PM »
I was reading and then downloading LibreOffice this afternoon.  This is a continuation of the concept and the work that came from OpenOffice.  Everything went pretty painlessly so I went ahead, after testing some files, and uninstalled the previous version of OpenOffice.

I went ahead and downloaded the "language pack" and installed it; not sure it was necessary but whatever!

And here are the things that are new in LibreOffice 3.3:

"LibreOffice?" Does it come with an English language package? My Spanish/Galician/Italian is pretty rusty... dntknw.gif

Libre as in ... free with few or no restrictions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gratis_versus_Libre

From the site: In the dropdown list on the right, choose the language you want. If you just want US English, you don't need any language pack. wink.gif

Off to download and give it a test.

I think the install seemed a lot easier than the last time I installed OpenOffice; I guess I didn't need the extra language pack but I thought what the heck! wink.gif

I generally delete language packs to regain the ~GB of space they take up...doesn't always sit well with some apps (I won't name them, but the company's name is abbreviated A D O B E). tongue.gif Less of a nuisance with hundreds of GB drives...but "back in the day" we weren't always given the option of installing them. "Hey! The developer knows best! Just do what they say and be quite! You're lucky to even have a Mac version..." rolleyes.gif Nice to see those developers taking users into consideration. doh.gif But those guys are not supporters of the Big Guys, anyway. rofl.gif

Edit: <Where these developers came from and why>.
