Firefox & the disappearing 'Back' button
« on: August 29, 2011, 09:26:40 AM »
Hi everybody!

I'm back after a long absence which has something to do with my decrepitude (nice word!) and lots to do with having moved from Leopard to the King of the Jungle.  Plus I am still trying to master the Track Pad.   But I'm getting there sloooowly.

But this query has little to do with Lion.  It's about my favorite browser.  Well, it used to be my favorite until I could no longer find the 'Back' button.   What's happened?
And how does one get back a page two without an app re-start?  wallbash.gif

I use Command + Left arrow to backup a page or Command + Right arrow to go forward.

FF 3.6.20 OSX 10..8

Does not work in Safari 5.0.5 for me. That's another reason I prefer FF.
Altho FF just keeps coming out with new major releases in a whirlwind.
I'm sticking with 3.6.20 for now. Had some problems w/newer versions a couple of times.
But I love 3.6.20.

More to the point though, where'd your back button go? Mozilla hasn't mysteriously removed it...

I'm using FF 5 in SL at the moment - about to reboot in Leopard - and it's there in both - same place as always.

Which version of FF are you using? Any add-ons?

It's there in FF 6 too - I downloaded that and checked too. There would be a HUGE hullabaloo if they took away the back button, so there is definitely something wrong with your FF, no matter which version it is.

You may have turned off the navigation bar by mistake:

Try the stuff suggested there and let us know if anything works. smile.gif

Does it provide the double-entry function? laughhard.gif

Have you looked in the View->Toolbars->Customize menu? Perhaps you disabled/removed the back button, if so, maybe it's in the available items to install. dntknw.gif My version (5.1.1) also shows command-[ as the keyboard shortcut for going backwards in "History" (not sure what they mean by "History," however, I suppose it is limited to the "History" of any particular tab...).

V6 has the same button as I see in V5. dntknw.gif

Thanks for the suggestion Jim, but I see no possibility of replacing the Back button in  the Customize menu.   I'm quite happy with Jack's suggestion of using  the right & left arrows

Peter, check the link I posted above. There is definitely something wrong with your Firefox - the back button should be there and if it's not, you should check the various options to restore it.

Paddy,

After going thru several options, the Back Button has reappeared.  Had to disable all add-ons but doubt I'll miss them. Many thanks.    thanx.gif

Why not re-install those add-ons, one at a time and determine which one is the culprit...if there actually is one? Randomly changing things, without keeping some kind of record of what is being done can deprive you of the extra features you liked/wanted/needed since you have no idea what actually solved the original problem. wallbash.gif Nor can others learn from you travails! eek2.gif We need all you 'bleeding-edgers' experiences! clap.gif

Well Jim, I've just Googled 'Firefox add-ons' and there seems to be hundreds!  However I've bookmarked the site and will slowly go thru and see which ones I fancy.  If my lovely new iMac blows up I'll know who to blame.   biggrin.gif

Well, I wasn't suggesting you go an add every add-on available! I thought you might have remembered a few of the ones you had instlled and just add some of those! eek2.gif That should be fewer than 100, anyway!!! But FF should be telling you when you have an incompatible add-on, anyway. At least that's what seems to happen when I download a new version of it.

The key is to only install one at a time, preferably only one or two in a week. Then use FF for a few days and see if things go awry. If it does, you'll only have to remove the last one or two that you installed. Remember that any one add-on may be fine, by itself, but it may not 'play well with others.' In that case, you may want to investigate further to divide which one of a pair gets the boot! scram.gif

But, whatever you find out, please add it to the info here! yes.gif
