Updating Garmin satnav maps
« on: September 23, 2011, 05:50:21 AM »
Well, after nearly five hours, I've downloaded the latest maps and installed them in the satnav. Note in the download window was understating when it said "this could take a while" - it was several minutes before anything even appeared in the progress bar! And that was after taking the precaution of an ethernet connection between Netgear and MBP.

Annoying thing is you can only download maps for the whole of Europe. Then it tells you your device does not have enough memory for all of them and offers you the bit you wanted in the first place (in our case, obviously, the UK).

Interesting that going to System Prefs after plugging in the cable to the MBP it had already switched over from Airport. Macs are just too darn clever! wink.gif

It just looks at what's available and picks the fastest method, almost always ethernet, of course. OTOH, it gets unpleasant running an Ethernet cable throughout the house and having people/dogs tripping over it. All that screaming and wailing tends to distract my web surfing... rolleyes.gif
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system
CAUTION! Childhood vaccinations cause adults!

Yeah, you don't want to have any of that going on! whistling.gif

This ought to make you laugh... I remember in the earlier days of wireless thinking I would run a 100' long Ethernet cable from the garage to the house, and put in another router or switch  in the house and then string more cable... We had to modify our phone drop to get service in the garage and it came in there first, and now that's where the router is for the ADSL.

Good thing wireless networking got faster in a hurry! wacko.gif And that cable is still in use, albeit mostly coiled up, to feed the Airport from the ADSL router.
