Norton SW 3's here
« on: June 27, 2003, 09:19:19 PM »
I got my copy of Norton Systemworks 3.0 today. I'm going to use Retrospect first to back up the iMac and iBook before I use Disk Doctor or Speed Disk in OS X. The software is buggy already, though- the box sat on the ground outside all day and after opening it, the dinner table was covered with ants.

ant cam

Ant Brood Tacos

*   2 tablespoons butter or peanut oil
*   1/2 pound ant larvae and pupae
*   3 serrano chilies, raw, finely chopped
*   1 tomato, finely chopped
*   Pepper, to taste
*   Cumin, to taste
*   Oregano, to taste
*   1 handful cilantro, chopped
*   Taco shells, to serve

Heat the butter or oil in a frying pan and fry the larvae or pupae. Add the chopped onions, chilies, and tomato, and season with salt. Sprinkle with ground pepper, cumin, and oregano, to taste. Serve in tacos and garnish with cilantro. (Not living in an area exceptionally prolific with ants, I have never been able to try this recipe. But it sounds perfectly delicious! I found it in 'Creepy Crawly Cuisine', an excellent recipe book.  clap.gif

Oh great. Ran Disk Doctor; major errors, all repaired. Speed Disk: disk is damaged: run Disk Doctor. Ran Disk Doctor; iMac shut down .......
I used the money-back guarantee on NU 4.0. Maybe this, too...

More and more I catch some scary problems folks have using norton with X.
Starting to make me think three times before firing norton up on X these days.
Yet speed disk is all I use in norton ... still.

All of the icons in the HD and several in the Apps folder are now invisible. The HD can't be repaired with Disk Utility or -urgh- Disk Warrior. According to some other forums I should have repaired permissions after installing. I also should RTFM, as we used to say on submarines.... doh.gif

I have had nothing but good luck with Norton on my OS X system (version 6.0.3). Of course, this is because I never did install it (too many horror stories, and filesaver just plain sucks). Also, I have always booted from a MacOS 9 CD, and did everything from there.

I wonder what I'm going to do when my new G5 comes. fsck works very well, but OS X really fragments the hard drive, and optimization is normally a good speed boost. Although, with that machine, I shouldn't have to worry about speed wink.gif

giantmike,

Could you explain how you use Norton Utilities (version 6.0.3) on your OSX Volume?

I didn't think you could even boot up into 9.2.2 with it.

I've only had one serious problem with norton and x.
Other than the one,nothing but good reports as you GM.
Same here. Run speed disk from a bootable.
I do have norton installed on another partition though.

From GM: "this is because I never did install it" and "Also, I have always booted from a MacOS 9 CD, and did everything from there."
As long as you have a suitable system on the bootable Gary.

Bill,
I did not know that. So, you make a bootable copy of Norton's with 9.2.2 on it and you can use Disk Doctor and Speed disk on OS 10.2.6?

I'd love to get a look at that volume. It's 60mb and has never been defragmented. It must be a mess. I have run DW for the Directory but that's it.
