What do I need to connect
« on: June 29, 2003, 08:21:33 AM »
We are finally ridding ourselves of the wallbash.gif  Direcway satellite hookup wallbash.gif and getting thumbup.gif DSL wub.gif  notworthy.gif

I'll need to hook only two machines, my 6400 (it has an ethernet card in comm II) and a Compaq running XP.

Can I hook the Compaq into the USB port on the DSL modem and the MAC into the Ethernet port on the same modem at the same time? Or should I get a router?

All we want to share is the connection, no files, no printers, nada.

I was told by Verizon, they can share the DSL modem, but I have to disconnect the USB for the p.c. and then connect the ethernet cable for the iBook, and not both connected at the same time......I have them almost side by side, so that is not a problem. I'm sure there is a networking whiz that can fill you in on that part, but without buying more equipment this works for me now...trish

If you had Jaguar and XP you might do Internet Sharing but otherwise... smile.gif

Hi Jennie,
I did like bobw and invested in a Netgear 4 socket router and as he says just hook it up, my setup is one G3 one G4 and a self build PC with XP.

HOOK UP TWO OR MORE MACHINES TO ONE CABLE/DSL CONNECTION:

Check the discount store ads in the Sunday paper. Find a LinkSys 4 Port Cable/DSL Router (about $50-$60 after rebate, Radio Shack actually carries them as well). You can also use the slightly more expensive Wireless LinkSys 4 Port. It will work in place of an Airport for much less if you think you might want Wireless access down the road or already have an Airport enabled machine. Other router brands may work but we know these work reliably. It is what we use! Order your Ethernet Cables from us. The discounters stick you on them after saving you on the LinkSys. Follow the instructions that comes with the LinkSys. Set your LinkSys to serve DHCP and then change your TCPIP settings on your Mac to DHCP. Your router will automatically assign your machines IP addresses then. This router has the added benefit of providing some protection against hackers. Install 10/100 Ethernet cards for faster access.

CAN I HOOK MY PC TO MY MAC?

But why would you want to? Yes you can hook up your PC and your Mac using an ethernet network or CROSSOVER CABLE but the PC won't talk to the Mac or vice versa. DAVE from Thursby is software that enables your Mac to communicate with a PC. It is expensive however. Check their web site http://www.thursby.com for a demo version. Connectix makes software for working on a PC network. "DoubleTalk" revolutionizes Mac-PC networking by enabling Power Mac users to connect to PC network servers and printers from within the familiar Mac interface - not in a Windows environment. No network reconfiguration is required - you can set up your own Mac and connect to a PC network right away.

Found a good deal on a Trendware TEW-311BRP which came with TEW-301PC Wireless Adapter-just in case HOATT gets tired of Direcway-or I could hook up the laptop Thinking.gif clap.gif

Y'all were right!  Easy as pie, (apple, Bill, apple)  Had to call Tech Support to change the IP address, don't know why, had to change a 1 to a 0, but  wub.gif  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif
