Running Onyx on the G5
« on: January 28, 2012, 09:19:03 AM »
Just used Onyx to clear some caches, etc, on the iMac and recovered over 2GB of space jawdrop.gif

It also seems to be running faster, but there can't be a connection, can there? oops.gif

2GB of caches? Wow. Maybe I should try that on my Mac Pro.

I'm beginning to think 10GB of RAM isn't enough - not when I've got zillions of Safari windows open and am running VMWare Fusion & Win7, Photoshop, Lightroom, Dreamweaver, Mail and assorted other apps. tongue.gif

Occasional restarts also help - that's something I need to remember too. wink.gif

Safari is notorious for having a memory leak. Try running your other apps without having Safari open. You can also see what Activity Monitor says.

I'm well aware of Safari's persistent memory leak, Jon. wink.gif I have Activity Monitor running most of the time (and iStat running in the menu bar too) so I am always painfully aware of what's causing the problem. Safari, with enough windows running can easily gobble up several GBs of memory. Safari Web Content is almost always the top of the list for memory use. The problem is, I'm developing a couple of WordPress websites at the moment, and as I'm just learning about it all, I tend to have a lot of windows open about various aspects. There's not really any way around it - all the other browsers eat memory too, if you get enough windows open! I try to close things as I go, but one thing leads to another... wink.gif

Thanks for the timely reminder. Installed the latest for 10.6, ran it, recovered just over 1GB of space, emptied my trash can  rolleyes.gif  and recovered another 1GB of space.  whistling.gif Yes, my iMac is now running faster as well. laugh.gif

Some apps have prefs for their cashe sizes. I keep Safari's "Database storage" at ZERO in hopes of making refreshes actually load the pages (and CSS) instead of retrieving from the 'cash.'  The problem is I don't see exactly how many different cashes it might be using. If you have the Debug menu enabled, you can also "Disable cashes" (note the plural). With a fast interweb connection, you probably won't notice much unless you refresh pages with huge, embedded files (videos, audio, etc.).

Elements also has settings for cashe sizes and I'm sure most graphics apps would, also.

Frankly, Paddy, you should be able to get along just fine with 640KB... laughhard.gif

Ran into a bit of trouble,,,,,I updated my OnyX for each Mac, downloaded the proper ones for each OS.
When I started it on this one, it unexpectedly quit, and acted strange.
So I deleted it.

Then on the other Mac, it hung it up badly, sounded like the poor hard drive was in overdrive, wouldn't let me force quit anything. so I had to hold down the power button. Restarted it OK, its happy now.
So I guess I wont mess with OnyX any more, surprising, as it always used to work just fine.
Wonder what was going on with it.
