How do you upload photos to your web site?
« on: February 19, 2003, 04:09:00 AM »
I now have a web site which is "under construction" since I am unfamiliar with the procedures for adding items to the site.

For example, I have a bunch of pictures that I want friends and family to acccess. How do I upload the pictures to the web site so that others can access them who have my web site address which has the form: domain_name.com.

Thanks for any advice or help,
MamaMoose

Firstly, you will need ftp software (if you don't have it already) to make the upload. I've always used Fetch and I would say it's as good as anything for the Mac. Download it here .

Once installed, launch Fetch and you'll be presented with a window asking you for a host name, User ID, Password and Directory. The host name will be the company that's hosting your site (ask them if you're not sure), the User ID will be your user name on your account, the password is self explanatory and the Directory is the folder in which you will install your files - it might be something like docs/ or it may be left blank - again, if in doubt, ask your ISP.

Once you've got all the settings correct, Fetch will take you into the Directory and you'll see all the uploaded files listed in the Fetch window. New files you simply drag onto the window and they will upload, files you want to delete can be highlighted and deleted.

Hope this helps

Paul

Transmit is another good ftp program. Once you've uploaded some files to your website host, the URL is stored and you can get it from a pulldown menu instead of typing it in every time.

Your ISP has no doubt given you a "home" directory on their  web server. Which would be something like: www.domain.com/~your_user_name/ but may be different.

You'll then need to write the html pages so your visitors can access your directory and view the pics.

Most of the time you need to start with an index page also known as the default page. From there you can link to other folders you create within your alloted space.

Photoshop (and possibly Elements) can create a picture gallery including all html code with a few clicks of the mouse.

I'll second the recomendation for Transmit, well worth the $25.

Or you could just upload the images once you're at your site manually.

Are you paying for someone to host your website?  They may have an FTP File Manager which will enable you to upload pictures.

The key to uploading pictures without too much aggravation is:

(1) The case must be exact:  So when you have to type in the name of the picture you want to upload, for example, "Moose.jpg" is NOT the same as "Moose.JPG" nor "MOOSE.jpg".  It has to be exactly the same.

(2)  Don't try to upload a picture which is too large.  I change all my photos to JPG (or JPEG) format, before uploading them.  If it is too large, it won't upload, or it will take forever.

Good luck!

I am not sure if this is any help for what you are trying to do, but it may be worth looking at.  It's called WebPics,it's Shareware and judging from the reviews in Versiontracker it's great.

Good luck:)

Tom, if you already have a program that you used “Pagemill” “GoLive”  or something to build and upload the website you will place the pictures inside that folders~ sub-folder.
(in Pagemill it’s called “Images” in Golive it’s called Media)

From there you will open a new page, (or if you want to insert the pictures into an existing page open it.) You can add text to describe the pictures, or not, an you can either drag and drop or use the insert command in menu bar. The picture will appear on the page, or it will display a name.gif  othername.jpg where you directed it. It will link the picture in that sub-folder to the “webpage.html” that you re-/created. Then you should place a link on the index(first page) directing folks to “thenewpicturepage.html”

Be sure to name the pictures.gif or pictures.jpg “anyname.gif” “anyname.jpg” (one word unbroken word before the DOT)
Be sure to name the page “something.HTML” (one word unbroken word before the DOT)

Upload to the existing site address already built, making sure you upload the whole site. You could upload portions if you new what portions and it was a huge site, but in this case just upload the whole thing. That will include the sub-folder as well as the new html page/s.

Good Luck

Not sure how you got your site uploaded originally. But that same 'software' (ISP or computer based) may also upload pictures for you.

An aside for the picture details:
I recently bought Photoshop Elements (since it was so cheap, like me!) and have used it to reduce the size of many images on our churches site, while at the same time keeping the quality of the jpeg's. I also changed all the 'jpeg' labels to 'jpg' since that seemd easier than re-writing the code for Elements! The full version of Photoshop may have the same function called "Save for Web..." Using it further reduces the file size but maintains all the needed bytes for proper display. If you have a lot of images, it can save a lot of space.

Secondly, while the names do need to be exact copies in both the HTML and in the file names. But They don't have to be all one long string of characters (ala, early windoz conventions). But do not use a space between words, instead use the underscore character '_'; ie "This_is_a_picture.jpg" Helps to keep from going crazy reading your files!

I need to know how to upload 'manually' as I just had the same problem; tried to upload stuff to my site using Netscape Composer, and kept getting 'invalid password' when I hit 'publish'.  Called my ISP and they reset the password but it still wouldn't work, we gave up, it was time to cook dinner.  When I first put the page up last year, we had the same problem, so they told me to open IE and drag the page and picture into it and bang, there it was!  But do you think that I can remember how I did this? Nooooo,,,,,,, Neither could their tech support people.
This is the page, http://users.adelphia.net/~jcarter11/
All I was trying to do yesterday was to put a sitemeter on it.   But I have many pages and pictures to upload.

First:
Never used NS to create a page. Looks like that is what you used originally. You say that tech suggested you "...open IE and drag the page and picture into it..." I can only assume that they were talking about the HTML page that NS must have 'Saved" for you.       But that doesn't have anything to do with how you got the page uploaded to your space in the first place. All you did was drag a file onto an app that could handle that type file, just another way of opening a file. A properly writen HTML file could be drag-n-dropped on any browser and show up in it.

Second:
"upload[ing] 'manually'" is done by using a simple FTP program, Fetch, Transmit, etc. You will still need any user name/password/etc. that you have been assigned by your ISP. But you might want to check to be sure that they even allow FTP access, some don't (usually for security reasons) or charge extra for that 'priveledge.'

Make sure you have the ID's/PW's and an accruate URL (http://users.adelphia.net/~jcarter11/) for you space before you even download the FTP program. Sounds like what you need to do is create a folder/directory in your space (which is really just another folder/directory at the ISP's site/HD) for the pictures, that is simple to do with the FTP program, almost like doing the same thing on your Mac. I'd call it something unique like "graphics"!       Then, in your HTML you can 'point' to the pictures you add to that folder by using "img href="graphics/Cute_Cat_Picture_23.jpg"..."

I suspect that when you created your page in NS that you simply dropped in the jpg file and it (NS) simply added the name when it created(!) the HTML. You probably then sent that file to your ISP in some manner, probably on a page just for that purpose. While this makes posting a page (or maybe a whole site) easy, it does not usually allow for much detail control or directory creation. You might search around on that "web building' page of your ISP and see if there are any options for adding pages and especially directories. If not, ask them about FTP access to your space. They may not even allow it. But if they do, forget about their 'help' and do all this stuff yourself. It's much easier than dealing with tech 'help' people who really don't have a clue. And you know there are many here who will be gald to really help.

Hi Jim,  Thanks!  When I tried the first time, the tech led me thru a convoluted process that I never understood.  I thought that was the way that Adelphia people had to follow to upload their pages.  Now, with all the trouble trying to do it out of my memory, nothing worked.  I am going to follow your instructions carefully tomorrow.  I wondered if I should be using Fetch, which I have, but they discouraged that.  They said they 'dont support' uploading the pages, just provide the space.  So the first tech was trying to help me, and neither of us really knew what to do.  But now I do, thanks to you.
I have lots of great pictures and travelogs that I just have to get going with, and I know I can do it with your help!   I hope it is bad weather tomorrow, so I can't go outside.   Oh, don't let the dog or the husband hear me saying that,,

Yes and no Jim.

Some host servers have their own uploading features besides your [you own] FTP.
Fact is,many give you the option of using their built in feature or your own.
Case in point is my post above: "Or you could just upload the images once you're at your site manually."
What I meant by that is if the host server has an uploading program in their software.

I just created a sub-folder called "TS" and uploaded that pic, then planted it on a dumb-looking-page.

Uploading Program!  That's how all the photo albums do it.  It is sooooooo easy!
I use this on Pbase.com all the time.  I even thought that I would do my travelog pages on pbase.com as it is so easy.   But I really want to have my own site,,,,,
