Dual link dvi adapter
« on: April 25, 2012, 10:28:53 AM »
I'll be getting a new 15" MacBook Pro, but keeping my old 30" Apple Cinema display. I'm told I need a dual link dvi adapter, but the reviews of the Mac brand product are not so good. Has anyone had luck with that brand or another brand?

Guy,

I can't speak with authority since I have never owned an Apple Cinema Display.

But I think all you will need is a Mini Display Port adapter to whatever video input is supported by the ACD.

I have a MacBook Pro 13" (mid-2010) that I have hooked up to external displays using both HDMI and standard SVGA & VGA inputs.

Using the appropriate dvi adapter cable.

The most recent is a "Kanex iAdapt MDPHDMIV2 HDMI V2 - Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support" that I ordered from Amazon for $28.
And that's probably overkill.

This is the HDMI version.

FWIW,

Jack

Gfx Guy, you are aware that it's generally felt that new MacBook Pros are imminent? I wouldn't buy one now unless you know you want a refurb and/or don't care what the new models may bring. Rumour has it that they'll be more like the Airs - no optical drive, thinner, etc. June seems to be the timeframe many think likely - and it makes sense if Apple wants to catch the all-important university back-to-school market.

http://www.amazon.com/Kanex-MDPC30-Display...8306&sr=1-2 for an alternative connector that people seem a little happier with. BTW - you need a dual-link DVI-D adaptor. There are other (cheaper) adapters that have DVI-I, that don't work with the 30" Cinema Display.

Thanks guys. Good info. IT is ordering for me, so I sent a quick note to see if we can wait a bit longer.

I'll still need the DVI-D version with that?

Yes, I believe so - as it's the Cinema Display that needs it, not the MBP. wink.gif I suspect the "D" stands for dual-link. The MBP is still (as far as anyone knows, that is) outputting video on the Mini Display Port.
