Sorry, it lost me in the first "response." "Sans-serif" fonts are called that because they don't have serifs. If "The '1' was actually an upper-case, sans-serif 'I.'" it would look more like this: I Of course, it would still be practically impossible to discern the difference between a capital I and a lowercase l in many font families. rolleyes.gif  wallbash.gif That's the main reason most CAPTCHA "texts" ignore case and use serif fonts.
